CL Love Equine Services

CL Love Equine Services CL Love Equine Services LLC is owned and operated by Cindy Love, offering horse training and lessons.

Haven Ridge Equestrian Center has sold it's facility and will be operating only as CL Love Equine Services LLC. I will be concentrating on a few training horses and will travel for lessons within the Eastern OH/Western PA area. My background is very eclectic, including dressage, natural horsemanship, hunter jumper, trail, cattle work, and barrel racing, with an emphasis on relationship and biomechanics to improve overall performance and enjoyment of both horse and rider.

Being mostly retired has afforded me the opportunity to try to help people for free with certain training issues, though the end goal is to put together something that actually generates a bit of revenue, as I did not retire wealthy. Looking at pictures and videos on the internet, sometimes I cringe and think, I cannot help this, it’s too much, but let’s be honest, if only the perfect people were riding, there would be a whole lot less homes for the wide variety of horses that need good homes. I also acknowledge that I never have been and never will be a perfect rider or horseman, and at this point, most of the time I kind of look like crap on a horse, a bit too much weight, instances where I feel the need to safety up for the learning curve of the horse, etc. The best thing I bring to the table for the horse is the continuous desire to learn more and be better. Sometimes we need to stick with a particular program, but sometimes a change can make us have a lightbulb moment that takes us to the next level. I have had the opportunity to work with some great trainers in my lifetime, and sometimes what one had been telling me over and over finally clicked when another one just approached the same thing from a slightly different angle. This experience has really helped me to find that thing that will click with each rider, as opposed to just carrying on hoping that they will finally get it with no change to what I’m telling them. I mean, doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity, right? Video of me being less than perfect on my horse, in my defense, it probably was his third ride, but still…

I have had the pleasure of working with some great horses and people through the years, those who have contributed to my learning and those that I have hopefully made a positive contribution to. Just looking back at some of the kids that practically grew up in my barn. Believe me folks, though it may seem like it on social media sometimes, the world is not lost. I can’t name one of these young people that isn’t out making the world a better place.

Horses give us an opportunity to continually improve on ourselves. On the journey, we are sometimes going to backtrack, and sometimes we are going to make huge leaps forward. I try to keep an open mind with anyone that embraces horsemanship as ever evolving. I’m certainly not perfect, I’ve never had perfect balance, timing, or patience, but for a very long time now, I have embraced getting better than I was yesterday. One of the biggest things I think we have to accept as horsemen, is that sometimes we need to be willing to strip away the tools that we thought we needed, and exchange them for new and often what appear to be lesser tools. The recent bridleless competition in the UK showcased a wide variety of happy and relaxed horses, it gives us a lot of food for thought. I’m not ready to feel safe out on the trail with no headgear on my horse, but it definitely makes me pay attention more to what is helping my safety in the saddle, and what might actually be hindering it. Picture from almost 60 years ago for attention.

I have ridden green horses most of my life, many that I had the pleasure to start, some that just needed a bit of help here and there, some that owners were looking for new homes for. I have not had an opportunity to ride a lot of high level horses, a few once or twice, but not many. My niche has always been keeping myself and the horses out of trouble and filling in holes until it’s pretty hard to get them into trouble. I’ve had decent success in the show arena, but not anything to brag about. I know enough to help and ride a pretty good barrel horse, cattle sorting horse/ranch horse, jumping up to around a meter, but showing at less, and I can ask for and ride a few fancy dressage moves , plus I can get a horse pretty confident on the trails, but I’m not brave enough to do super crazy stuff. Basics like round circles, keeping a horse square under you, etc, are second nature to me, and I can watch a horse and help the rider help them. Obviously, there is a lot more to it than I’m mentioning, but hopefully you get the idea.

I come here today to remind folks to make sure they have the tools on hand to help their horse when they need it. Don’t over bit them for the level of understanding they have, if you’re likely to have any kind of broncy situation (which I avoid like the plague), leave your cool spurs at the trailer. Spurs can have a use in lateral work and getting a horse to lift its rib cage, but most people, if they end up trying to ride some bucks, are going to stick their spurs in a horse and escalate matters. I’ve kind of gotten to where I don’t find a lot of use for spurs anymore, but I have a pretty effective leg, and other tools in my box. The good news is that my 4 year old, who actually has pretty limited mileage, continues to make good decisions even when crap is hitting the fan next to him. Love my SPY Master FAME baby, Spy My Dashing Legz.

It’s interesting to me, at least in the content creator portion of the horse trainer community, how some folks want to share their knowledge, but really push back when you suggest potential expansion of that knowledge.

I don’t even train for the public anymore, but I have always been, and still am, open to learning how to do things better.

The horse is a complicated individual physically, we can really hamper their abilities with our 100-200 pounds on their backs.

Maybe because I grew up riding horses, but without a lot of training, I was more receptive when I was able to get it. Maybe because I’ve wanted to do many disciplines, I was open to the nuances of what each discipline could teach me.

I’ve been pretty successful in helping riders, even those with limited time and horse power. I guess it might come down to the limitations of the internet, let’s get out and ride our horses, and socialize with real horse people in person. I am heading out the door as soon as I get some lunch.

Gosh, a freshly mowed pasture is sure pretty. I hope this horse that wants to come in the house, appreciates the tender grass and less bugs.

There were parts of this pasture mowing project that made me think we should have hayed it, but it’s mowed now. Maybe second cutting hay?
