Congratulations to our beloved ex-president John Licata for graduating this past spring with a degree in Mechanical Engineering!

John was a longtime member of NUPL, serving as both secretary and president throughout his tenure. John’s many accomplishments include placing 1st at the 2022 Massachusetts State Championship, and placing 6th at 2022 Collegiate Nationals with a total of 702.5kg!

A few favorite memories from John:

One of my favorite memories is the first tryouts we had after the Covid shutdown (fall 2022). After a year and a half of semi-remote team activities it was awesome to see so many people come out and have an interest at the team. The energy of the 3 rep max week is always crazy but that year it was definitely on another level. It was an exciting start to what ended up being a great year

Another of my favorite memories is when Ian pulled his last deadlift to qualify for nationals in 2020. The whole team was in the stands cheering for him and we went crazy when the lights came up. He even earned himself a hug from Joe Capp. Not an easy task to accomplish.

Our final goodbye on the women’s team goes to Raven Matthews.

Raven is an amazing lifter and friend. She was a great leader and rack captain. Raven absolutely killed it at nationals, placing 2nd in the 56kg class. She’s always improving and constantly getting stronger and we love to watch her succeed. Raven graduated with a degree in computer science and design.

From Rae:

My favorite memory was getting to graduate at fenway park with all my powerlifting homies! They made sitting out in the sun for several hours fun :)
