The boat makes a one-hour island stop at Sand Dollar Island off Fort De Soto, with a bathroom and bar on board.

Regular rates:
Adults: $65
Kids: $50
Kids 3 and under: $5

But for today’s day trip, Dad rides free.

Manatee facts worth knowing:

Manatees are marine mammals, not fish, and they’re actually related to elephants. They breathe air, surface regularly, and spend much of their time in shallow coastal waters, rivers, springs, and estuaries.

They’re herbivores that graze on seagrass and other aquatic plants, which is why they’re often called sea cows. An adult can eat around 10% of its body weight in vegetation each day and can weigh more than 1,000 pounds.

Despite their size, manatees are gentle animals. They have a flexible upper lip that helps them grab plants, their teeth are constantly replaced as they wear down, and their powerful paddle-shaped tail helps move them through the water. Baby manatees, called calves, stay close to their mothers for a long time.

Manatees can hold their breath for a while, though they usually come up every few minutes when relaxed. They’re also more agile than people think.

One reason they need protection: manatees have very little body fat, so cold water can be dangerous. Major threats include boat strikes, habitat loss, cold stress, and poor water quality.

Respect the manatees and slow down in posted zones.
