GROVELAND ICE RINKS STATUS UPDATE

Notices like this are always difficult to share. It feels like we just opened for the season, and your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers, more than anyone, want to see the rinks remain open as long as possible.

Unfortunately, beginning today, Thursday, February 12, 2026, the rinks will be closed, and the Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers will cease all ice maintenance activities. Due to high temperatures, skating on the soft ice in the coming days would cause damage that cannot be repaired without flooding or using the Zamboni. We take our responsibility to be good stewards of our water resources very seriously, and temperatures are simply too high to flood the rinks. Additionally, as the ice softens, it becomes unsafe to operate maintenance equipment.

Warming House operations will also cease. The building will be closed, and skates will no longer be available for check-out.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to another wonderful, though short, skating season at Groveland. We are incredibly grateful for the tremendous support from this community and for the many thoughtful and kind words you have shared. Your enthusiasm and love for Groveland are what make this place so special.

What happens at Groveland truly is magical and it’s because of all of you.

THANK YOU, PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS!

Your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers organization extends our deepest and most heartfelt thanks to our friends at Play It Again Sports on Snelling Avenue in Saint Paul for their incredible generosity and ongoing partnership.

Through a recent and very generous donation of skates, Play It Again Sports has significantly strengthened the skate inventory at Groveland. Providing skates is central to making outdoor winter skating truly accessible to everyone, and this donation directly helps remove barriers for neighbors who may not own skates or be able to afford them. Because of this support, even more skaters can experience the joy, health, and sense of community that comes from being out on the ice.

Owners Alex and Max Selim, who both grew up skating at Groveland, have led Play It Again Sports – Saint Paul with heart and purpose for the past eleven years. Their deep personal connection to the rink and genuine commitment to giving back shine through in their continued support.

We are profoundly grateful to Alex, Max, and the entire Play It Again Sports team for being such thoughtful and generous partners. Together, we are helping ensure that skating remains welcoming, inclusive, and accessible to all who wish to enjoy our neighborhood ice.

Community support like this makes a real difference. We encourage our neighbors to support the local businesses and volunteers who help keep Groveland thriving, and, if you’re able, to find your own ways to give back. Every act of generosity helps keep our rink, and our community, strong.

Thank you, Play It Again Sports, for making such a meaningful difference in our community.

Your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Saint Paul Mayor Kaohly Her for taking time out of her busy schedule to visit Groveland Ice Rinks. During her visit, she generously handed out egg rolls - a special treat. As Mayor Her shared, “Food is how we show love in Hmong culture, and nothing brings me more joy than making egg rolls for you!”

On January 31, 2026, the Groveland area community came together to celebrate Frost Fest 2.0 - and what a celebration it was! Originally planned for the prior Saturday on "Hockey Day Minnesota," the event was postponed due to dangerously cold temperatures. Anyone who has organized an event knows the worries that come with rescheduling: Will people still be able to attend? Will volunteers be able to adjust their schedules? And, of course, will the weather cooperate?

Happily, every concern melted away. On the rescheduled day, more than 500 people gathered under sunny skies to enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, and goulash around the fireplaces. Families and friends took part in puck coloring, free skating lessons, a hockey shooting contest, and a wide variety of games and activities for kids of all ages. The winter clothing drive added a meaningful opportunity to give back, rounding out a day that truly had something for everyone.

It was a wonderful occasion to come together as a community, celebrate the tremendous city we call home, meet new friends, and strengthen existing connections. The laughter, smiles, and shared fun were contagious, and the spirit of togetherness could be felt throughout the day.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to Tori Miller and the Macalester Groveland Community Council; Patti Schwartz and the Groveland Recreation Center; and the Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteer Organization for hosting and organizing such a terrific event. Special thanks as well to Groveland Tap and Play It Again Sports for their incredible support.

Frost Fest 2.0 was truly a family affair and a perfect reminder of what makes the Groveland community so special.
