We have all heard the same advice to “be a team player“. But what happens when we take that advice to the extreme and no longer seem like a good fit for that next leadership position?

You see there is a difference between being “kind” and “too nice.”

Not only can “too nice“ lead to stress and burnout as we take more and more on. It can send a message that we are too busy or incapable of more critical matters. 🤯

Being “busy“ does not mean we are being “effective”.

And it is that efficacy and business impact that is truly considered when the leadership team reviews options for potential promotions or when they are making downsizing decisions. 💰

Did you convince professors to turn your 95% test scores to 99%? (okay, that one may just be me)

Do you seem to work HARDER than EVERYONE else but get recognized HALF AS MUCH?

This might be a sign that you believe - and I once did too - that super amazing, high quality work speaks for us.

But it doesn’t.

The only person that knows what you need is you.

And the only way to get it is to advocate for yourself.

I’ve never heard sweeter words in my life. ❤️

Amber decided that she didn’t need “fluffy crap”, she needed actual, practical, tools and support.

And that’s exactly what I believe in.

In fact 1 of the 3 core values in my business is “All Action & No Fluff.”

Why? Because we are smart, capable, doers, achievers, and so passionate about what we do.

We don’t need the motivation to do it - we need the shortcuts to do it right the first time.

So how do you do that?

An easy way is to proactively identify and address opportunities beyond the role you’re in.

Then decide how you can help.

This shows that you’re thinking about more AND you’re capable of more.

It’s not that technical skills don’t matter. They do.

It’s that soft skills are often the difference that leads someone to be more effective in a role, get recognized as high potential talent in their company, and helps them land those higher level leadership positions.

And it leads you to overthinking, second guessing, and rationalizing your ideas? ❓❔❓❔

We can all get hit with confidence blocks sometimes.

But it’s important to express your ideas with confidence so that you’re taken more seriously in the workplace. 👩🏼‍💻

Would you go to that new taco joint if your friend seemed unclear about it? Maybe not. But their excitement and belief might sway you.

People feel confident in those that feel confident in themselves.

And there are specific moments when your skills can really SHINE and make others take notice. 🔆

And that is during times of unproductive or less productive discussion. ✔️

If the group is not headed to a place of solution- this is a great time to bring everyone together and plot a path forward.

Some examples of how you can do this:
- Summarize the core needs and concerns of the group
- Encourage the group to focus first on what’s in the group’s control
- Recommend a first step to shift the conversation towards beginning

Hi, I’m Rachel. 👋🏻

I was incredibly motivated to be successful in my career and had some early wins. 👏🏻

But then I got stuck.

It felt like all the fire I had inside didn’t have an outlet. And that others weren’t open to my ideas.

Even though I worked the long hours and was rated a top performer.

It took me YEARS to figure out the career killing mistakes I was making so that I could harness my talents and step into the leader I was meant to be.

Now as a leader of a national marketing team and a super fan of bringing others with me, I’m proud to work with awesome clients that want the same in their lives.
