The Advantages of Early Bedtime are a HUGE game changer when it comes to your little ones sleep! Get rid of those night wakings and early risings by adjusting their bedtimes!

We want to get kids in bed before they reach an overtired state, which leads to hyperactive behavior; this happens when we miss their optimal sleep time and their body produces cortisol, a hormone which helps one to stay wake and activates adrenaline! This all means it is harder to settle down and fall asleep at night, leading to those pesky night wakings and early risings!

They can help to get sleep back on track during:
* Sleep Training
* Nap Transitions
* Days When Child is Overtired or Daytime Sleep Goal is Not Met
* When Sleep has Been Disrupted
* A Nap was Missed
* After a Vacation/Time Zone Adjustment

Not only are early betimes beneficial but so is a consistent bedtime and routine! If they know what if coming next in their schedule they feel more secure and confident! You’ll have a happier, well reseted child the next day PLUS be able to have some time doing what YOU want to do! Binge Watch Schitt’s Creek? Glass of Wine? A Good Book? Imagine the Possibilities!

Save this post as a reference for you as your child grows!

Though Sleep Recessions can be VERY difficult while you’re going through them, there is light at the end of the tunnel! ✨ These usually only last a few days to a week tops! But know they not forever! Setting your child up with a consistent, healthy, age appropriate schedule and routine, as well as a sleep conducive environment, will only help to get through these recessions!

Below is a list of WHY these recessions may be happening! Of course, every human develops at different rates but this is generally what is happening at these ages!

* 4 Months- Sleep is Transitioning From Being Unstructured to Structured- More Schedule and Routine Than First few Months of Life.
* Teething
* Growth Spurt
* Out of 4th Trimester
* Distinguish Between Day and Night

* 8-10 Months- Lots of Milestones to Get Through!
* Babbling
* Rolling Over
* Sitting
* Standing
* Crawling

* 12 Months- Way too Much to Do- Learn, Play, Walk- I can’t sleep!
* Walking
* First Words
* Separation Anxiety
* Fomo (Fear of Missing Out!)

* 18 months- Independence and Resistance is a Big Part of being an Almost Toddler, Plus Lots of Changes!
* Resistant- love the word “No!”
* Independence
* Increase in Vocabulary
* Separation Anxiety
* Nap Transition

* 24 months-
* Fears of the Dark
* 2 Year Molars
* Potty Training
* New Family Member/Big Changes
***Most think move to a big kid bed should be here- but keeping kids in their cribs as long as possible (3 years?) has some great benefits- more on that in a different post later so stay tuned!***

It seems that Infants turn to Toddlers within the blink of an eye; they grow fast which means it can feel like their schedule changes SO often too! With that being said, here is a chart for Wake Windows!

👶New parents, you’re going to want to keep in a good place! Save or screenshot this post as a reference as your little one grows and their schedule changes! 📸

Because babies can accumulate a sleep debt easily, they are prone to being overtired; this over tiredness produces a stress hormone cortisol, which makes it harder to fall and stay asleep through their sleep cycles.

Though aiming for circadian rhythms, age appropriate nap times, is important, wake times also need to come into play! Before 4 months of age a baby’s sleep is unstructured, but as they get older and more aware of their surroundings, babies sleep starts to fall into more of a routine! After 4 months you can really start to get this routine on a set schedule!

How do you know when your kiddie is ready for a nap?

Knowing when your little ones are ready bed involves a handful of things; What time did they wake up? How did they sleep last night? How long have they been up? (wake windows) How was their last nap? Are they displaying sleepy cues (rubbing eyes, dazed, laying on ground). Finding out exactly what’s needed for your child can be exhausting!!

This all contributes to getting these wake times and circadian rhythms to line up can be tricky- instead of reading a bunch of books (I already did that for you!) and trying all the methods, let me help!

I’ll give you choices for methods, will formulate a plan that works just for you, and support you the whole way through!

Theres many ways to go about sleep training, let find the best fit for you and your family!

Did you know?! That for every hour of sleep lost at night, you lose 2 hours of productivity the next day!

Think of how much more you could be getting accomplished if your whole house was getting a FULL NIGHTS SLEEP! Well, I’m here to tell you that its possible!

Sleep training is beneficial for the whole household, let’s eliminate some of that cranky, overtired behavior of babies, toddlers and preschoolers that comes from accumulating sleep debt!

A study published in the journal Pediatrics in 2013 has shown that kids who have a consistent bedtime and routine, as well as those who get more restful and restorative sleep more often are better listeners and more well behaved!
It also shows that the longer time spent without a regular bedtime, the worse behavior grew.
The positive? This is very easy to fix; once a bedtime was set and followed, children’s behavior noticeably and quickly turned around!
If that isn’t a wonderful incentive right there I don’t know what is!

Here is a throwback picture of me as a two year old displaying all the right overtired signs by passing out with my hand in a popcorn bowl.
Can’t say this wasn’t how I fell asleep last night too...😂😂

Let’s talk SLEEP ASSOCIATIONS!

Sleep Associations are actions used to help your baby or child fall asleep, there are some actions you can do that are more positive than others! At first, I felt that the word negative sounded too harsh, but it’s not that is a negative action- rocking is soothing and of course, a positive thing to rock your baby, it’s WHEN the rocking takes place!

Rocking your baby from an awake state, all the way asleep is the issue, you are doing all the work for them! This leads to more night waking’s- when they finish a sleep cycle, the way in which they fell asleep is different and they want that same routine and environment they fell asleep to recreated. For example, if your baby falls asleep every nap and bedtime by feeding to sleep, they will associate eating with falling asleep. If your baby falls asleep during a feed, its not the end of the world, we just don’t want to form a habit out it. To prevent these negative associations, replace them with the positive!

I’ll break it down for you:

These negative sleep associations usually involve a parent or caregiver assisting in one of more of the following actions before nap or bedtime:

Nursing or bottle feeding to sleep
* Rocking/bouncing to sleep
* Touching child until asleep
* Driving in car until asleep
* Lying next to crib or bed until asleep
* Pushing in stroller for naps

These positive sleep associations usually involve the baby doing the following actions ON THEIR OWN:
* Holding/rubbing/sucking/biting a lovey
* Singing
* Humming
* Babbling
* Sucking thumb or fingers
* Kicking feet or laying in fetal positions
* Rocking back and forth
Here some “external sleep associations,” environmental factors which help your little ones fall asleep faster, easier and stay asleep longer:
* Blackout shades
* White noise machine or fan
* Room temperature between 68 and 72 degrees
* A lovey, if over one year, to help learn to self-soothe and comfort to sleep

One way to help break these negative sleep associations is through sleep training; using the right method for you and your family, science backed sleep tips and some extra support from yours truly! Book with me today!

Like all good things, it can take time getting your little ones sleep to line up, but staying consistent with these three factors that you can do every night to help achieve a healthy nights sleep for the whole family! I use the phrase “consistency is key!” ALL THE TIME with my clients!

1. Routine: Creating a consistent routine before naps and bedtime help your child to feel safe and confident, this helps them to understand and learn what is expected of them at this time: to sleep!
2. Environment: Letting your child fall asleep in the same place, with sleep conducive conditions every night further instills this routine. A dark, cool room; white noise machine and, if needed, a red or amber colored night light is going to be the recipe for success.
3. Schedule: Depending on your child’s age, having them sleep at their optimal biological sleep time can be just what a little one needs! These biological times are called circadian rhythms and can help your baby to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer!

What is a consistent, must have in your child/children’s bedtime routines? Comment below!
