Noted artist James Walls started drawing as a child and has never stopped. He uses a variety of styles from detailed realism to loose lines to capture his equine subject. Regardless of the horse breed he is drawing the artist says his goal is to โcapture the unique look, personality, style and action of each subject.โ
Here, in a drawing from 1980, Walls has pictured the famous Rex McDonald. Foaled in 1890 by Rex Denmark out of Lucy Mack, this black horse was famous. Volume two of the series "Short Stories about Famous Saddle Horse" is dedicated to Rex McDonald. Author Herbert J. Krum says of the horse "There has never been a more perfect example of the saddle horse...Everything that he does under the saddle, he does naturally, does it as a saddle horse should do it, and does it as though it was the thing for which he was intended by nature to do."
