For today’s , we’re showcasing the members of the original Lady Dutch junior varsity basketball team. The team consisted of 11 players, but Cheryl Gray was missing from the 1969 yearbook, so we’re only able to show you 10 of the players who made up the squad. According to the available records, the junior varsity team actually recorded their first win before the varsity team, but we’re not sure who it was against. If you know, or if you know who coached the jv or varsity teams that year, let us know in the comments!

For this week’s , we take you to what was reportedly the first home court for Lady Dutch Basketball! If you guessed “C. Bennetts Valley High School” as the answer to yesterday’s question, you were correct!

The news release that announced the formation of the Lady Dutch Basketball Team stated that all home games for the March 1969 season would be played at Bennetts Valley High School in Weedville. We do not know for sure if that is where the games actually ended up being played, so if you do, please let us know in the comments!

According to the Mt. Zion Historical Society, Bennetts Valley High School became part of the St. Marys Area School District in 1965. Their website states that “In 1967 the last graduation was held in Bennetts Valley. In 1968 and 1969 the students went to St. Marys for their graduation after attending school at the Weedville high school. In fall of 1969, the junior and senior high school students were bused to St. Marys. This building became the Bennett's Valley Elementary School as a result of the destruction of the Weedville Elementary School building in May of 1969.”

Today, the building is the Bennetts Valley Community Center.

While the building’s name and purpose may have changed over the years, the gymnasium and basketball court still exist, and the location is even available for rentals. If you’ve never been in the gym, check out these photos of the site the first Lady Dutch basketball team supposedly called home!
