CURRICULUM
Safety & rescue swimming is our first and primary focus. Once we tackle these lifesaving skills, we move on to stroke development. My curriculum is unique in that it is flexible and fitted to the needs of each student. I incorporate my experience as a YMCA Instructor of all ages and an Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) Instructor – along with my experience in water safety at SeaWorld and the YMCA to offer a program that you are unlikely to find elsewhere. While traditional swim programs are good, they are designed to teach skills slowly and to keep students in lessons for many years. The regular use of flotation devices and slow progression in those programs foster bad habits that are hard to break later for successful swimming – not to mention higher costs in the long run. Group lessons, although cheaper, provide very little instruction time for each student and therefore individual progress is hindered.
My philosophy is different because I believe teaching safety and survival skills is a priority as well as the fundamental basics needed for swimming success later. I never use flotation devices. Flotation devices are disruptive to swimming progress and tend to form bad habits. During lessons, I allow my students to experience the consequences of swimming without a flotation device which advances swimming skills and confidence very quickly. I will always be right by their side, protecting, guiding, and teaching them through experience and instruction. Once we have achieved sufficient lifesaving skills and comfort in the water, we will then move on to stroke development.
One of my strengths is the ability to identify the reason a student struggles with a skill and understand how to correct it. Sometimes this process is quick and easy; other times it takes a while to break bad habits and conquer fears. I will always communicate with the student and parent on what we are trying to accomplish and why.
If you are not a returning student, a phone consultation is necessary before registration. To schedule a phone consultation, contact me via text message at (708) 465-9860.
