CURRICULUM

Safety & rescue swimming is our first and primary focus. Once we tackle these lifesaving skills, we move on to stroke development. My curriculum is unique in that it is flexible and fitted to the needs of each student. I incorporate my experience as a YMCA Instructor of all ages and an Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) Instructor – along with my experience in water safety at SeaWorld and the YMCA to offer a program that you are unlikely to find elsewhere. While traditional swim programs are good, they are designed to teach skills slowly and to keep students in lessons for many years. The regular use of flotation devices and slow progression in those programs foster bad habits that are hard to break later for successful swimming – not to mention higher costs in the long run. Group lessons, although cheaper, provide very little instruction time for each student and therefore individual progress is hindered.

My philosophy is different because I believe teaching safety and survival skills is a priority as well as the fundamental basics needed for swimming success later. I never use flotation devices. Flotation devices are disruptive to swimming progress and tend to form bad habits. During lessons, I allow my students to experience the consequences of swimming without a flotation device which advances swimming skills and confidence very quickly. I will always be right by their side, protecting, guiding, and teaching them through experience and instruction. Once we have achieved sufficient lifesaving skills and comfort in the water, we will then move on to stroke development.

One of my strengths is the ability to identify the reason a student struggles with a skill and understand how to correct it. Sometimes this process is quick and easy; other times it takes a while to break bad habits and conquer fears. I will always communicate with the student and parent on what we are trying to accomplish and why.

If you are not a returning student, a phone consultation is necessary before registration. To schedule a phone consultation, contact me via text message at (708) 465-9860.

10 TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR MY SWIM PROGRAM

1. As early as possible, even in their first days of life, get them used to being in the water. Gently pour water over their face and head during bath time. Get them into a pool as young as possible without any flotation devices.

2. Start introducing them to holding onto the wall as soon as they are able. No flotation devices. Release them briefly on the wall so they learn how to hold on by themselves. Use your hands to cushion the wall and protect their face, mouth, and head. If they let go of the wall and fall into the water, help them back up by lifting them with one finger under one armpit. This will teach them the importance of holding onto the wall and pulling themselves back up for safety. Avoid grabbing and pulling them out of the water in a panic which will instill fear and teach them you'll always be there to rescue them.

3. For children ages 5 and above, Introduce them to blowing bubbles through their nose and mouth in the water with their FULL FACE completely submerged. Demonstrate this several times with your face completely underwater. For children under 5, teach them to close their mouth and hold their breath when under water.

4. Teach them to kick to achieve movement. Start by putting their arms around your neck while facing you on their tummy. Lower yourself to their eye level and lift their legs to the top of the water. Use your hands to move their legs to show them how to kick. Advance by simply holding them under their armpits, only moving when they kick. When they stop kicking -- stop moving.

5. When carefully supervised and by their side – ditch the flotation devices. Allow them to learn how to navigate the water without flotation and to understand the consequences of being in the water with no flotation device. I cannot emphasize the importance of this enough. Flotation devices are a leading cause of drowning due to muscle memory and a false sense of security – not to mention floaties foster bad habits that are hard to break and severely delay progress once in swimming and self-rescue lessons.

6. Pay attention to your reactions, facial expressions, and words used while in or referring to the water. Do not instill fear or reinforce discomfort if they go under unexpectedly, or get water in their eyes, nose, or mouth. Always use positive feedback rather than fearful or negative reactions. If they get water in their nose and cry – make light of it, smile and say “That tickles, doesn’t it? That happens to me too! It won’t hurt you – just blow it out.” Avoid inadvertently passing on to them your fears, dislikes, or discomfort of the water. Always smile and give positive reinforcement.

7. There is a time and place for serious conversations regarding safety and never entering the pool without an adult. Do this when out of the water, preferably at pool side to give them a visual association. Have many conversations about the dangers involved in being in the water alone until they learn how to rescue themselves.

8. Never allow them to hold their nose – they need both hands to swim. Teach them to blow bubbles out of their nose instead.

9. Never allow them to swim on their stomach with their head out of the water. Lifting their head puts them into a standing position which is the drowning position and is one of the hardest habits to break when learning how to swim and rescue themselves.

10. If you have a pool at your home, develop very strict habits immediately after exiting the pool. Close the pool cover, lock the fence gate, etc. immediately after exiting the pool. Teach your children to stand far away from the pool while you secure it. I strongly recommend a pool motion detection alarm as a secondary safety device. It only takes a few seconds to drown – and it is silent.

Paddle boards can be great fun but can be hard to get back on if you fall off. This press release yesterday announced the tragic death of a teenager in SD. If they had known rescue swimming — they could have likely saved themselves. So sad…
