What does a fishing guide do on a day off? They go scouting of course. Guiding on up to 50 north woods lakes requires constant updating. Yesterday I noted a complete absence of w**ds on a deep clear lake. There was only one spot that I noted the start of w**d growth and I found the most fish.

Here is a tip for live bait users. If you are fishing gravel or rock, use crawlers. They mimic crayfish best. Dan Gapen once wrote that night crawlers taste like crayfish. I don’t know if he actually taste tested it. Weeds usually favor a leech bite although crayfish will eat w**ds. A lively leech is the best bait under a slip bobber. I don’t use minnows in warmer months as It is too hard to keep them alive.

Return client Kevin and his brother in law were ready at the dock when I came in after marking some w**d beds. Unfortunately his brother in law tried to slow the boat with his hand and pinched his thumb between the pier post and trolling motor skeg. He sustained a nasty cut that needed stitches and reinforced the idea that I never ask for help when I am landing the boat.

Kevin quickly caught his limit of eater walleyes in 45 minutes. 4 passes over a wind blown w**d bed with paddle tail minnows was all it took. We then searched for smallmouth. Fish were found on some wind blown stump and gravel points and then larger ones on the same w**d bed that Kevin caught the walleyes on.

We used at least 8 different techniques to search for the fish but they were definitely off compared to the torrid bite yesterday. Fish have moved shallow to take advantage of warmer water. People who fished last weeks deep water bite didn’t adjust and blanked.

Landing a large fish takes a bit of skill and good equipment. You need a good reel with a good drag that allows boat side runs and a rod that has a fast tip that keeps a good bend in the rod and acts like a shock absorber. I use Piscifun reels due to their excellent drag system. Carbon X II and X III are my favorites. Piscifun R1 spinning rods are lightweight and super sensitive and have the fast tip. I also use Eagle Claw Flyover series rods that offer incredible sensitivity for a modest priced rods. I have found them for less than $50 at Franks Great Outdoors

I wanted to let everyone know that my website is no longer available. I could not justify paying $600 a year to maintain a website that was a pain in the butt to edit.
My rates are $350 for 5 hours of fishing and I clean a reasonable amount of fish. I pride myself in teaching clients new techniques, boat control, how to read electronics and even how to cast further. My science background also allows me explain the ecology of the area and fish behavior. If you want to learn how to become more successful as a fisherman then I am a good choice. If you want to fill the freezer then frankly I am not your man.

Longtime clients Dan and Dave crushed the big smallmouths today. Smallmouth love warm water and with water temps closer to 80 degrees, they were on fire. X raps and Pro tour bait paddle tail minnows were the ticket as we also caught pike and walleye. Smooth drags are vital when trying to land smallies and Piscifun Carbon XII and X III were the ticket. Dan had two 20” ers in the boat but Dave was hooking many on the paddletail. He landed his PB but lost many others. Finally at the last spot he set the hook and it didn’t budge. After a battle he landed a true northwoods giant 21” small mouth. LAX may be getting a call!

Spent the last two days trying to put smiles on the faces of a father daughter duo and then a father son.
Day 1 - Molly and dad caught many pike on a morning where the water temp dropped 7 degrees overnight. We caught more fish on the side of the lake where the wind blew the warmer surface water. Paddle tail minnows , xraps and small suckers under a slip float enticed the pike to hit. Molly was an amazing young lady as she identified multiple birds by their calls.

Day 2 - Former student Bill, who was my first client, and his son Aiden wanted to catch some walleye and pike. Bill started out off with a nice pike on the first cast. Another nice pike a few casts later and Bill was off to a good start. We moved a couple of times and Aiden was hot catching 5 walleyes on jig and crawler and slip bobbers and leeches. These were Aiden’s first ever walleyes . A 21” er was his biggest.

Despite the high water temps, w**d growth is still behind. Today I was on a deep clear lake and I had water temps that ranged from 65-70 degrees. However the only new w**d growth was in 3 -4 feet of water and was to***co cabbage about 6-12” high. The perch must have been in there as every cast was a bass or pike. Walleyes will use them in lower light. XRaps and small plastics on 1/8 oz heads will keep you over the w**ds.

Last week we found crappies and walleyes over rock humps either relating to the heat given off by the rocks and/ or feeding on hatching bugs. Point is to find what they are feeding on and fish them at the dinner table. Long casts are required as the water on all lakes I have fished have been crystal clear besides pollen and poplar fluff. Plenty of ankle biting flies and mosquitoes too at launches.

As we quickly transition from upper 50’s on lakes to 60’s and beyond specific lakes are all over the board as far as the spawn. I cleaned crappies from two different lakes with similar temps and depth and found crappies full of spawn on one lake and completely devoid of spawn on the other. Walleyes are anywhere from shallow suspended over rock , in w**ds or down to 10-12’ over rocks. One day bass will be shallow and the next they are in deeper w**ds. That means you need to fish fast to locate fish and then slow down to fish the school. I suspect with the warmer weather and more consistent temperatures, the fish will be settling into more consistent patterns.

With the wide variety of lure selections, deciding on a selection can be overwhelming. My choice has been simple. Paddle tails from Pro Tour baits and Nomad Design have proven to be vital for success. I have used Pro Tour bait paddle tails for over 10 years. Daren at Pro Tour Baits has figured how to infuse fish oil into the plastic that make it very supple. This allows the tail to wag at very slow speeds and wobble on the drop.

Nomad Design is a company from Australia that has inserted a piece of foil in its Spectre Minnow series. This creates flash and its availability in 2.25” and 3.25” size has proven deadly on 1/16-1/8 oz heads. Crappie, walleye , bass and pike are all attracted to this minute plastic.

Lastly twitch baits have been effective in the shallows over w**ds. The retrieve is very important as it triggers fish to attack the bait as it resembles an injured minnow. Two sharp twitches followed by a pause triggers pike, muskie, walleye , bass and big crappie. XRaps, Stunnas and the new Maverick all have slightly different actions that may entice the fish to attack.

5 straight days on the water around St Germain and here is what I have observed. Super clear water and bright skies has fish very spooky. We did better on walleyes and crappies casting long distances with 2” paddle tail minnows by Nomad Design. The Spectra series has foil inside that provide flash that has proven to be a life saver in tough conditions. Found pike in w**ds hitting XRaps, walleyes on rock and scattered w**ds from 6-12 feet, largemouth tight to banks and crappie suspended over rocks. I think they are relating to the heat radiating from the dark rock and feeding on hatching bugs. Thanks to Jason and Steve for the pics. My guys threw the fish in the livewell before I could take pics.

Cold nights and brilliant skies have created a finicky bite especially for mid day walleye. We were forced to throw tiny 2” paddle tails to catch some nice walleyes , crappie and smallmouth. Even the crappie which were cooperative yesterday had tight lips. Only a half dozen on minnows under slip floats. On days like these, the skill of the fishermen shows through. Marvin had the touch today and caught almost all of the fish. Understanding the nuances of a fish bumping the lure vs grabbing the bait determined success today. Listen to your guide.
