Yesterday, David had the pleasure of hosting a family on a private guided tour that featured remarkable wildlife encounters. Paddling in ideal evening weather, the group spotted a diverse range of species, including kingfishers, beavers, muskrats, cliff swallows, deer, eagles, great blue herons, and sandhill cranes.

The dark fishing spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus) is a common spider within the Saint Croix River Valley. despite its name suggesting a water-dwelling habit, these spiders tend to prey on insects and other small arthropods. I call them the ninjas of the forest because they sneak up on their prey and kill them undetected, they don’t use webs for traps, just pure ninja like killing power. But as their name implies they can also hunt small fish and aquatic insects by sensing vibrations on water and diving down to attack.

They are known for their large size (females can have a 3+ inch leg span), hairy body, and camouflage, with dark W-shaped markings on its abdomen.

This beautiful specimen is shown basking on a kayak seat that I had put in the sun to dry up at Paddlefish HQ. Maybe she hitched a ride back with one of you???

Don’t worry, I always inspect the boats down at the river before customers get in so that I can carefully set free any wonderful creatures that I find resting onboard.
