One thing is for certain when it comes to this hunter from Jasper, Alabama. He is a great marksman with a tendency to sleep through his alarms unless it's for an early morning 2021 Osceola Spring turkey hunt.

Pictured here is Brett Pate with his nice looking gobbler weighing 19lbs, with 1 1/4 inch spurs and a 10 inch beard. This wasn't a typical hunt for us but all those involved can agree it was nothing shy of extraordinary. Brett got to experience his hunt alongside friend Chad Hughey, guide/owner of Florida Backwoods Ratso Pennington and guide Wyatt Whalen. Brett and Chad doubled up on a pair of twins with a 1,2,3 countdown shot. From a distance you could not hear a separation in the shots.

Thank you Brett for allowing Florida Backwoods in on such a memorable hunt!

Grit.

Mark Braud from Louisiana is an example of a hunter that had the grit. The grit to hunt hard and all day long. But in the end it paid off with Mark bagging this big, strutting gobbler. The bird had a 9 inch beard with 1 3/8 spurs.

Congratulations Mark and guide Steven Pennington on a job well done!

I got a chuckle when guide Charlie Whalen compared this next hunter to a cat! I asked a cat? His reply back was, "Yes mam. I had to look at him to make sure he was still there. He walks so quietly."

Emmett Braud harvested his second Osceola turkey with Florida Backwoods. The bird weighed a little over 15 lbs. He has 2 beards 9.5 and 6-1/4 inches and 1 inch spurs. Finding a Tom with two beards is a rarity and adds even more excitement to the hunt. Mr Braud is 81 years young and moves like a cat in the woods. Congratulations sir!

Mother Nature always makes guiding interesting. Opening weekend our guides and clients dealt with high winds and low temps.

Thick, dense foggy mornings with hot afternoons is what's in store for these group of hunters.

Chris Bonner from New Orleans, Louisiana harvested his first Osceola turkey with guide Charlie Whalen. The fog was thick and this Tom never made a noise! He weighed 14.5 lbs, with a 10-3/4 inch beard and a 1-1/16 inch spur. Congratulations Chris l!

One of the reasons our guides love what they do is the story telling that happens after every great hunt. So this story goes a little like this.

I am sure many of us can relate but after successfully bagging his first turkey, Josh Moser wanted to do it all again! Making the second hunt even more special Josh wanted to hunt alongside his father, Mark. Guide Charlie Whalen, Josh and Mark initially spooked a gobbler away from the area they were hunting so they set up for a long hunt. About 15 minutes later that gobbler gobbled at about 50 yards. In the next 5 minutes, the gobbler passed within 5 feet of the hunters and was headed straight to the decoys. Josh made a great shot at about 20 yards. Josh’s second Osceola turkey weighed in at 16-3/4 lbs with one spur at 1-1/8 inch and the beard was 9-5/8 inches. I think it's safe to say Josh may be hooked on turkey hunting now.

"Lagniappe" is a Cajun word and it means something given as a bonus or an extra gift.

Tommy Butuad from Louisiana got himself a "lagniappe" opening morning. Not only did he score with double monster Osceolas, he got to experience true Florida beauty. This is Tommy's fourth year visiting and hopefully not his last. Congratulations Tommy and guide Steven Pennington on a great hunt and this frame-worthy picture.
