Two years ago, I started writing a manual. What I really needed to create was a bridge. 🇺🇸
A bridge between hearing about a benefit and knowing what to do next.
Before I retired, I would hear things like:
“Make sure you get your property taxes taken off.”
“Your kids might be able to go to school for free.”
“You can get your student loans taken care of.”
And my response was always: Okay… HOW? Who do I call? Where do I go? What paperwork do I need?
I knew some benefits existed. What I didn’t have was a clear path from knowing about them to understanding whether I qualified and how to apply.
Then, through my work as a Veteran Services Officer and conversations with other veterans, I kept hearing those same questions. At the gym. On base. From people getting ready to retire. From veterans who had already been out for years.
“I heard about this. What do I do?”
That gap stayed with me.
Sometimes we need someone to walk us through something unfamiliar. Sometimes we need our hand held for a little while. And that is okay. We don’t know what we don’t know.
That’s why I wrote What 100% Permanent & Total Unlocks: Your 30-Day Benefits Activation Workbook.
It started as a much larger manual. But as I worked on it, I kept asking myself: What would actually help someone take action? What could they sit down with, work through, and use to track their next steps?
One of my favorite parts of writing this book was thinking back to my own transition and asking:
“What did you need to know that first week? What would have helped you and your family?”
Read your decision letter. Understand what it says. Print and save your benefit letters. Check your dependent information. Find out which identification cards you may qualify for. Ask questions when something doesn’t make sense.
And yes—the money questions matter, too.
What does my award say about payment? What effective date did VA assign? Where do I find information about retroactive pay? Who can help me understand a discrepancy?
After 20 years in military administration, I know the importance of official correspondence. Directives, publications, pay, regulations, and records—that was my world.
I wanted to bring that experience into something practical, so a veteran could hold a decision letter and know what to look for, what questions to ask, and where to seek help.
Writing those first steps was my favorite part. I could picture someone opening this workbook and finally having a starting point.
I retired in 2022. My 100% P&T effective date came in 2025. There was time, uncertainty, and work between those milestones. So I also thought about the veterans still navigating that process—the ones attending appointments, documenting their conditions, asking questions, and advocating for themselves.
This book is for veterans who have recently received 100% P&T and are asking, “Now what?”
It’s also for those who have had their rating for years but still have questions, and service members preparing to transition who want to understand what may be available if they qualify.
Every person’s situation is different. Preparation still matters.
For the last 20 years, so much of my life has involved developing, advising, and leading people. Being someone they could trust to help them understand their next step.
This workbook is an extension of who I have always been.
My hope is that it helps veterans feel more informed, more organized, and more prepared to move forward—for themselves and their families.
Because hearing about a benefit should come with a way to understand the next step.
