You may have noticed that some people with Parkinson’s seem to stare or look fixedly ahead. This can sometimes be misunderstood, but it’s usually a symptom of the condition, not the person.

Parkinson’s affects movement, muscles, and the way signals travel in the brain. This can lead to changes in facial expressions and eye movement:

Reduced blinking (often called “Parkinson’s mask”): The face may look still, serious, or expressionless. To others, this can appear like staring.

Difficulty shifting eye movement: Parkinson’s can affect the muscles that control the eyes, making it harder to look quickly from side to side or up and down.

Concentration and fatigue: Living with Parkinson’s means everyday tasks often take more focus and energy. Someone may appear to stare when they are actually concentrating or simply tired.

It’s important to remember that this “stare” is not rudeness, disinterest, or lack of emotion. People with Parkinson’s feel the same emotions as anyone else, it’s just that their facial muscles and eye movements don’t always show it.

At Parkinsons.Me, we encourage friends, families, and communities to see beyond the stare. Look for the words, the feelings, and the person behind it. By understanding these symptoms, we can replace misunderstanding with empathy.

Parkinsons.Me supports families affected by Parkinsons Disease in Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Our goal is to help families find positive ways of living with Parkinsons by helping each other and taking part in community events.

For most people with Parkinson’s, tremor is not debilitating. However, a tremor is annoying. It also attracts attention, so many people tend to keep their bad hand in a pocket, or sit on it during conferences. Since it disappears with movement, it turns out that tremor does not interfere severely with activities of daily living.
