Hot Dog Shoot – January 17, 2026

The first Hot Dog Shoot of the 2026 Shooting Season was held on January 17th. The attendance was one of the best in the last couple of seasons, with fourteen, bundled up shooters lending a hand to set up canopies. With that completed, flags, practice targets and benches adorned with airguns of various makes, front and rear rests, air tanks and coffee cups were made ready for three events. The 25-meter paper target, 75 yd paper target and the spectator favorite, the Chicken Little Silhouettes. With coffee cups in hand the shooters descended upon the three boxes of cookies Patrick’s wife baked for the attendees. Standing around, visiting and trying to catch some of the rays of sunshine starting to peak over the Santa Ritas.

After a short round of practice, the 25m event started promptly at 9:00. The wind was brisk at times, but that didn’t prevent some fine scores from being posted. After two cards of 25m, the target stands were moved to 75 yds, for another two cards at that distance. The wind was supposed to go down, by the 75 yd competition time, I guess it missed that news. However, Terry Wiest posted a score on one card, that is one of the best I have witnessed, given the conditions. We finished ahead of schedule, and most of the Silhouettes were set up before lunch.

Our Chef Jim and his sous Chef Sandra, served a piping hot, Hot Dog lunch and we proceeded to the Chicken Little Silhouettes. The wind was still pretty dicey and the scores showed it, with only two shooters getting perfect scores of 32. To determine 1st and 2nd place. 4 chicken silhouettes are placed at 70 yds, each shooter is allowed 4 pellets, the clock is set at 2 minutes. Terry Wiest and Jack Mercer were in the shoot off, both knocked all four over. They were set up again, clock set at 1 minute, both knocked all four over again, They were set up again, clock set at 30 seconds, Terry knocked over the most, winning the Gold, giving him a clean sweep of Gold medals in his shooting class. Well-deserved Terry, it wasn’t a wind friendly day.

Some other notable scoring, on Saturday was by Jeff Miller, who has just returned for the winter and shot a couple of times in 7 months, won two Gold medals in his class, Bron, won 3 Gold in his class.

Through Patrick’s guidance the QCAGC is developing some excellent shooters. He’s at the Range, most Thursdays and Saturdays, but won’t be back for a few weeks. He’s getting a hip replaced next week, wish him the Best. I will be standing in for him for the time being.

The Quail Creek Air Gun Club held its annual meeting on December 12 this year. The club members were welcomed by Rocco Colicchia (President) with presentations made by Steve M. The next events made up the fun part of the meeting. The presentation of the Jack Mercer Top Gun trophy and the presentation of the Mike Schlesinger Member of the Year trophy. The Top Gun trophy was presented by Jack Mercer to Terry Wiest for earning an outstanding 68 points during the 2025 competition shooting season. Mike Schlesinger presented the Member of the Year trophy to John Livingston. Members of the Club voted for John for his many contributions to the success of the Club. Congratulations to Terry and John. There was also a raffle at the end of the meeting. Patrick S. donated $100, which Paul Lischeid won and a Riton scope donated by Chris Varas was won by Barry Cohen. Recently, the Quail Creek Air Gun Club held its first Hunter Field Competition of this season. To get enough competitors the club waits for all the snowbirds to come and nest in the warmth of the southwest. Like other clubs we run matches in winter, generally the first Sat of the month.
What is Hunter Field Competition? We have graduated from the Red Rider BB guns that were common in most families. Instead of a BB most shooters use .177 caliber lead or eco friendly pellet. The pellet basically has the shape of the badminton shuttlecock. Soft pellets flatten and fall. Participants shoot in classes. There is a springer class (similar to the Red Ryder), and another class for shooters using compressed air. That class has subclasses due to what upgrades have been made to the air gun. As in all hobbies the upgrades can be never ending. Ie Why have a putter when you can afford a Scotty Camaron putter?
We are allowed to use maximum 16 power telescopic sights. The 10-meter targets have an ½ inch diameter bullseye that you have to hit to knock the target over. The 55-meter target has a 1 ½ inch bullseye that has to be hit to knock that target over. One shot, one knocked over target equals one point and our matches have a perfect score of 48. So you may ask, what is so hard about that? Like real hunting you find a rest, ours are a pair of crossed walking sticks and a bucket to set on. Quail Creek holds their matches at our range in the area near the Quonset huts.
To start the season we had seven competitors and medals were awarded to the 3 top scores: Ben Spencer; Gold, scored 46
Larry Ford; Silver, scored 44
Andrew Weichert; Bronze, scored 43
Jesse Avery; scored, 36
John Weichert; scored 36
Brom Greenwood; scored 30
Tom Jackson; scored 27
A very safe and enjoyable time was had by all. If this article has sparked an interest or if you may have questions come down to the range!

The November 2025 Hot Dog Shoot conditions could have been worse------. It didn’t rain, but the wind was a different story. The direction was erratic; it was gusting from 8 to 13 mph pushing our 14 to 25 grain pellets in unexpected directions. Difficult to say the least.

With that said, Terry Wiest, shooting in Unlimited Class shot a perfect score of 250 on his first card in the 25-meter event. He went on to shoot the highest scores in the 75-yd and Chicken Little silhouette events for 3 Gold medals. Heartiest Congratulations to Terry for his outstanding performance.

In the Open Class competition, Jack Mercer was the high medalist, with a Gold in the Chicken Little, and Silver in the 25m and 75yd. Anita Teschek won Gold in the 25m, Silver in Chicken Little silhouettes and Bronze in the 75yd. Jim Graham in his first Hot Dog Shoot won Bronze medals in the 25m and Chicken Little. Good start Jim!! Ben Spencer, a guest from Phoenix won the Gold medal in the 75yd event.

Then there was the Springer Class, with two stalwarts, Bron Greenwood our outgoing Competition Committee Chair and Rocco Colicchia, QCAGC President, battling the wind. Bron was the medalist with Gold medals in the 25m and 60yd events, and Rocco with a Gold in the Chicken Little.

In spite of the tough conditions, I think everyone had a good time. The shooters taking advantage of Patrick Shely’s tutoring performed well. The hot dogs were great and cookies outstanding. Everyone pitched in to setup and take down the canopies and keep the event on schedule. Thanks to all shooters and volunteers for another successful Hot Dog Shoot!

This Hot Dog Shoot was the fifth of the seven-event season. Bron Greenwood, the Competition Event Committee Chairman, ask me and Patrick to host the October shoot. We were a bit disappointed that only 7 were registered, however 6 shooters have been attending Patrick's weekly shooting matches and training sessions. 4 of these shooters had previous experience, shooting in HDS competitions, 2 had none. Patrick’s training included the range commands that are used at the HDS, so the two new shooters were fairly well prepared. All 6 of these shooters have shot scores, 240 and above in training and have knocked down all of the silhouettes without a miss. They didn’t all start out that way, but with persistence and Patrick’s training, they have proven they can compete with the best.

In fact, in the 25-meter competition, Anita Teschek not only shot her first perfect score of 250 in competition, but tied Irwin Segerman in the Open class, with an amazing 3 card score of 747 out of 750. Anita won the tie and the gold medal, with the most Xs. In my opinion, Irwin who drives all the way down from W of Phoenix to shoot with us, is the best air gun shooter in Arizona. He has been a great supporter of our club for many years and has taken home many trophies. I know he was just as happy to see Anita do so well as we were. Oh yes, what about our 2 new shooters. They both won Gold medals, Jim Graham with a perfect 32 in the Chicken Little, Open class and Will Medicott with a 25m score of 734 in the Unlimited class. Last Gold medal went to Terry Wiest, winner of the Unlimited class Chicken Little.

Without a doubt, this was one of the most memorable Hot Dog Shoots I have been a part of. It was not a calm day; the wind was erratic. Yet, Anita, Irwin and Terry all shot perfect 250’s. The 747 scores were the highest I have seen at a HDS, and I have seen them all! My sincerest congratulations to all the gold medal winners. You have made me very proud. You have had one of the best instructors, and mentors I have known in Patrick. His ability to bring out the best in shooters that have doubts about their shooting skill is amazing. Anyone in the club who isn’t taking advantage of what Patrick offers, and wants to become a much better shooter, is missing a great opportunity. He will be conducting training on Thursdays from now on. If you are willing to make the commitment to the proper equipment, the time requirement and most of all the desire to become the best you can be. Come and join Patrick and 6 or 7 shooters on Thursday.
