Phase 4 of becoming a Pilates teacher: Teaching for Real

This is when your voice shows up.

You stop repeating cues the way you heard them in training. And you start using your own words to give guidance.

You respond to the person in front of you in a way that helps them understand and move better.

You learn how to say less and give more at the same time.

Sessions begin to flow more naturally. And corrections make sense (for you and your student).

This is where teachers become teacher.

Not perfect one. But real ones.

I didn’t plan to become a Pilates teacher.

I started as a student. I was curious. And honestly, I mostly just had questions I wanted answered.

I was originally trained in a contemporary approach and later transitioned into classical training because I wanted to understand how Pilates actually works as a system. That shift changed the way I practice and the way I teach.

Now each year I work with a small group of trainees as they go through that same process. Watching someone’s understanding deepen and their practice change never gets old for me.

Enrollment is open for this year’s Nephesh Classical Pilates Teacher Training, beginning August 7.

Some people join because they want to teach. Others join because they want to spend more time inside the work they already love. Both are the right reasons.

If teacher training has been somewhere in the back of your mind, this might be the moment to listen to that.

Send me a message and I’ll send you the link to learn more.

Try it on for size.

To be clear, I think there are quite a few different goals in practicing Pilates. But friends, the exercises are NOT IT.

The exercises are there to help us explore and discover. They’re not the goal.

Listen. A perfect Teaser or Push Up… boring.

I want to feel and see what’s challenging, what knocks you off your center, what pulls you out of alignment. So then we have something to work on.

Perfect is boring.

What do you think? Is your goal the exercises or is there something else there?

When I first started teaching, I thought confidence would come from knowing more.

More exercises.
More variations.
More cues.
More certifications.

But the biggest shift in my teaching didn’t come from any of those things.

It came from learning how to see.

Watching breath.
Noticing pacing.
Observing when connection was present and when it disappeared.
Letting my clients’ bodies guide my decisions instead of trying to follow a perfect plan.

This is the part of teaching that no one really talks about, and it’s the part that takes time, mentorship, and repetition to develop.

If you’re in your early years of teaching, this is where your energy is best spent.

Slowing down.
Repeating the foundations.
Trusting your own eyes.

Confidence grows from that.

Save this post so you can come back to it when you feel overwhelmed.

And if this resonates, you’re in the right place.

Today was a big day for me. If you know me, you know I wear loose fitting shirts, I hate shorts, I never wear a sports bra to workout in front of people. I’m not delusional about being pretty fit. But a lot of what I have is just good genetics... I get it from my momma.

In a world of really good looking and ultra in-shape peers, I have always felt ‘not good enough.’ Today I said f**k it and filmed three videos for my studio in a top that I originally didn’t want to buy and leggings I wasn’t confident enough to wear until today (thanks and for the boost of confidence talking me into this top... she told me when I bought it that most people would kill a small village to have a body like mine 😂).

I’m not sure why a switch flipped. But I honestly think that it’s seeing all of the real teachers out there on the internet sharing their content and their real bodies with their clients and the rest of us. To stay afloat right now, we don’t have a choice. And it’s been really great!

Just another glimpse of positivity in an otherwise crappy situation. Thanks Pilates world for being real and teaching me a positive lesson during .

Head on over to with me at noon today for a IG Live stretchy foam roller flow. I promise, no tears. Just some good movement using the foam roller as an assist. See you then!

P.S. has an 11am Pilates-inspired conditioning class with my friend ... the perfect pre-foam roller warm up 😉
