The Sacramento Sports Commission, a brand of Visit Sacramento, is responsible for fostering economic development of the region by securing, promoting and sustaining highly visible sporting events, tournaments and conventions. The Sacramento Sports Commission was created in the 1980s as a a joint city-county advisory board to attract and develop major professional and amateur sporting events in the
capital region. On Jan. 1, 2013, at the request of the Sacramento City Council and County Board of Supervisors, the Sacramento CVB took over the responsibilities of the Sacramento Sports Commission. This new Sacramento Sports Commission, a division of the SCVB, will be responsible for fostering economic development of the region by securing, promoting and sustaining highly visible sporting events, tournaments and conventions. Since its inception in 1988, the Sports Commission has been responsible for bringing a number of high-profile events to Sacramento, including the 1994, 1998, 2002, 2005 and 2007 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 1995 U.S. Gymnastics Championships, the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track and Field, the 2001 National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships, the 2007 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship, and the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Amgen Tour of California.
