Late last night, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted in favor of a declaration of support for an Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District to fund a new baseball stadium in Oakland.

Although the declaration is non-binding, the vote signals the County's desire to keep the A's local and its willingness to do the diligence required to reach a binding decision.

This is good news for Oakland and for Northern California!

Since this vote was non-binding, contingent on the county receiving more information about their stake in the Oakland Athletics project, this was not a vote for the project's final approval. Far from it, actually.

When skeptics question whether MLB could move to our city, they all repeat this argument: Sacramento doesn’t have enough money to support a Major League franchise.

And they’re not entirely wrong. Unlike some other cities (e.g., Las Vegas), Sacramento doesn’t have a list of large corporate sponsors ready to fund construction or trademark a scoreboard. But that doesn’t mean we’re impoverished. Instead of being concentrated in a few corporations, our wealth is spread out over thousands of small businesses and middle-class families.

We want to know how to engage a large percentage of our population in raising funds for stadium development. We also need to brainstorm how to combine crowdsourced funds with traditional financing sources to meet our goals.

At most ballparks, the best you can get is a re-heated hotdog and nachos. The San Francisco Giants have some pretty good garlic fries, but they’re nothing to write home about. If MLB moves to America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital, we must do better.

We want to know how to leverage Sacramento’s agricultural and culinary heritage to create the best dining experience in the Majors. And for a price that’s less than $15 for a soggy pretzel.

We want to demonstrate—to ourselves and to the world—that ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things when love, not profit, motivates our behavior.

We want know how bringing MLB to Sacramento can serve as a catalyst for improving our environment and lifting the marginalized. Because if this project fails to do so, then we have no business taking it on.

An MLB stadium in Sacramento should showcase the best that California’s Central Valley has to offer. The construction should be attractive, cost-efficient, and if possible, designed and built by local architects and contractors.

We want to know more about your experience, capabilities and vision. The goal is to brainstorm ideas for a proposal that will outshine alternatives from competing cities like Las Vegas and Portland.

When the Houston Astros needed new leadership following their infamous sign-stealing scandal, they hired a Sacramento native to take the job.

In January 2020, the MLB announced the results of an investigation proving that during the 2017-2018 seasons, the Astros videotaped opposing teams’ pitching signs and relayed them to the batter by whistling and banging on trash cans. Following the investigation, Astros’ manager A.J. Hinch lost his job.

Johnnie B. “Dusty” Baker Jr., a graduate of Del Campo High School in Carmichael, was called to take Hinch’s place. Dusty’s baseball bona fides require no explanation. “He’s a person of high integrity. He’s a respected leader. He has great baseball experience and he will earn the players’ trust,” said Astros owner Jim Crane when announcing Dusty’s new role.

During 2021, Dusty has led the Astros out of the wilderness and back to the playoffs with a 95-win regular season, and tonight, the Astros enter Game 1 of the AL Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox.

These are remarkable achievements, but perhaps most importantly, Dusty has helped players and fans to trust again.

On October 8, Elk Grove High School graduate and Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez blasted a 411-foot home run to take the lead in Game 1 of the NL Division Series against the Atlanta Braves. Rowdy was traded to the Brewers in July 2021, and he quickly became a fan favorite.

The Brewers went on to win the game 2-1.

R.I.P. Ray Fosse. 💔

All-Star catcher, two-time World Series champion and longtime broadcaster Ray Fosse has passed away, the A’s announced on Wednesday. Fosse was 74. Today’s featured player is Logan Webb, pitching ace for the San Francisco Giants. Drafted straight out of Rocklin High School in 2014, Logan debuted in the Majors in 2019.

In 2021, Logan pitched 148 innings for the Giants with a 3.03 ERA. He’s shined toward the end of the season, in particular. On October 8, Webb pitched a 10 strikeout victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the NL Division Series.

During May 2021, Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto, and Didi Gregorius of the Philadelphia Phillies suffered injuries that took them off the starting lineup. At that critical time, Jesuit High School Sacramento and California State University, Sacramento graduate Rhys Hoskins picked up the slack.

Rhys also dealt with his share of injuries during the season, but he still achieved some impressive stats: 27 home runs and 71 RBI during 2021.
