Greetings and salutations fine soldiers of the gymnasium Battlefield!
Welcome to another beautifully chilly November! My name is Coach Calvin and I will be your tour guide for the duration of this month :)
First off, I just want to say how proud I am with the participation and enthusiasm of last months, “pumpkin swing challenge “. Many of you fully embraced the concept, and we saw veer marked improvements in performance because you guys were putting in the time in the work!
Even if you were not the person to receive one of the top three slots in your division, everyone who participated gained that much more fitness and ability (which is really the point of it anyhow).
So kudos to everyone involved and I hope you enjoyed it.
That being said, let’s talk about November’s challenge . The Turkish Get up.
Or more importantly “ The Turkey-ish Get Up”
Last month we had a chance to focus on hip function and midline stability. The kettlebell swing taught us how to brace, extend our hips violently and receive force and load without damaging our position. It also gave us stronger, hamstrings and glutes in order to run faster and be more efficient in our gymnastics. This month we will be focusing on shoulders, stability, and range. The Turkish get up is pound pound, one of the best things you can do to create a better connectivity and awareness in your shoulder joint as well as safely making it stronger.
Multiple times a week we will carve out a little bit of time to review the steps and possibilities of why the Turkish get up is so good for us. And just like the swing, it is a movement pattern that we can repeat day after day safely, without overusing the muscle tissue.
Because it does not require a great deal of flexion and extension. It focuses on smaller muscle groups that hold the shoulder joint in place. This is a fantastic way to improve not only your pressing, but also your pulling wouldn’t you know it ,there’s some midline stability in there too.
Given all the success we’ve seen last month with the swing I’m very excited to be able to introduce and reinforce good shoulders throughout the month of November.
Realize this is not " Competition Format" there are no points because we don't want folks to rush the movement in order to gain points. Its all about Patience, Stability, and Strength.
This may demotivate some of you but remember, the WORK is the point and the RESULTS are the Prize. It paid off alot with you guys last month so lets keep that heat!
November 11 is Veterans Day. And We'll be observing it on Saturday Nov 12th with a Dave Castro inspired call to action of the "Chad 1000" workout
For Time:
1000 Step ups 45/35 # 20" box
As we have done before, this can be partial reps, team effort, changed and adjusted to all of our beautiful members. But keeping within safe parameters.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Finally We say Hello! to our Member Of The Month:
Dave C !!!!!!!
(I know, Im just as surprised as you lol)
Always one to bring his very own, very special brand of personality to the gym, David has been true to out community as long as i have been a part of it. He has experienced many ups and downs but his growth of the last year has been undeniable.
Both as an athlete and as a human being. Currently he is enjoying a fresh sense of momentum as he has PR'd a number of efforts and even manages to be on time for class ( mostly).
he aways knows how to bring a room up ( or downright keep it on it's toes)
Thanks Dave for always keep it interesting and please keep up the awesome work!
Thats all for now kids! Happy New month with new dreams and goals !!
Love Coach Calvin
