We are headed to Spain & Portugal in 2027!!! Embark on an Iberian adventure as you take in medieval architecture, idyllic landscapes, and delectable cuisine. Explore Spain and Portugal’s priceless treasures of art, history, and culture set against a backdrop of sunny Mediterranean shores and grand mountain ranges.

Highlights: Barcelona, La Sagrada Familia, Valencia, Paella Experience, Seville, Flamenco Show, The Alhambra, Cordoba, Madrid, The Prado Museum, Winery Tasting, Alentejo, Lisbon, and more!

We had a beautiful day yesterday in Damariscotta! First, we had a wonderful, guided tour of the Chapman-Hall House. Then a delicious lunch at Schooner Landing with amazing views. And last but not least, Ice Cream at Round Top!

📣As a reminder June Bus Trips opened today! There are currently 5 trips with space still available, including the Mount Washington Cruise from Weirs Beach to Wolfeboro for this coming Wednesday!

A fun Mystery Lunch down in Cape Neddick before the holiday weekend! This one definitely had everyone guessing!

Last week we held our Annual Spring BBQ for about 175 of our S**o Parks & Recreation SENIORity Programs participants! We always have a good time at this event and appreciate the various other department directors who visit and help serve. A special shout out and thank you to the City of S**o Government team who stepped up to help cook this year, and to Bradley Street Deli for the side salads & blueberry cake. As always, thank you to the Communications Department for capturing the day and the group photo.

On the raffle tickets this year we asked participants to tell us what their favorite thing was about S**o Parks and Recreation. We wanted to share the findings that made us smile: SPR’s friendly staff, the bus trips, the community aspect and being social, special events, EVERYTHING!, line dancing, food, the variety of programs, yoga, Pickleball, Mahjongg, knitting and more!! Thank you to everyone who attended. We appreciate your loyalty to our program!

This month we are highlighting one of the department’s Assistant Directors, Steve Brown!

Steve will hit his 15-year milestone with the City of S**o this summer. Like most recreation professionals Steve wears several hats for our department. His job title notes that he oversees our adult and youth programs, as well as our facilities, but he does so much more! He is passionate about building a strong team of camp counselors and has over 25 years of experience working in recreation camps.

We are especially lucky to have Steve’s kitchen expertise and ServSafe certification. Steve is the man behind the scenes (and in the kitchen) at most of our special events. These events include our annual Saturday with Santa breakfast, Annual SENIORity Thanksgiving Lunch, Annual Spring BBQ, SENIORity Dinner Dances, the monthly breakfast clubs, and more! Since May of 2025, Steve has been responsible for cooking over 900 meals for the community.

Steve is always thinking outside the box and bringing new and different opportunities to our participants. Several years ago he spearheaded bringing Lego Robotics to S**o and was involved regionally with the Southern Maine Gearbots non-profit organization for 8 years. One of Steve’s most recent community connections was bringing Independent Pro Wrestling events to the Community Center. Thank you, Steve, for you dedication and loyalty to this department!

Last week our SPR yoga community came together to celebrate Amanda Kezal’s dedication and loyalty to the program. She has officially been teaching classes at the S**o Community Center for 10 years!

What started as just a weekly 2-day program has grown into a full week schedule and a community of members. Lifelong friendships have formed and it has become more than just an exercise class for those who attend. Amanda has always willing to add, change, and adapt to the needs of the participants, adding chair yoga and new challenges for all levels. During the pandemic she was flexible and accommodating. Classes were moved outdoors with appropriate spacing so that participants could still gather and exercise during an isolating time.

Amanda currently teaches 7+ (sold-out) classes a week. The classes have tripled in size and now accommodate about 20 people per class. She has taught almost 2,000 classes for our community in the 10 years. Thank you, Amanda, for your 10 years of yoga with S**o Parks & Recreation Department, and thank you to our members for your dedication to the classes as well. We appreciate you all so much!

You can find all of her class details and the schedules on our website. We will be adding another class in June to accommodate demand. The June, July, & August sessions will be online by 5/20 for registration.
