One of the things Roger Starnes Jr has MOST wanted to do for the residents of the Village of Sabina, Ohio is to show some some tips on biking and walking/running on the sides of roadways more safely in town and anywhere you go.
Too often he sees women pushing strollers with traffic on the local roads, he see people walking and running on roadside also running or walking with traffic.
That is NOT safe for you! In a time when most drivers allow themselves to be distracted by their phones WAY TOO OFTEN, you need to be SURE that you can see them as they approach.
When they are coming up behind you, no matter your speed, YOU CANNOT SEE THEM AT ALL!
So, many runners and walkers recommend walking and running TOWARDS TRAFFIC so you can see the driver and vehicle at ALL TIMES. If they get distracted and start to run off the road you WILL see it and be able to react way before you get hurt or killed! So try it.
Also, many of the adults and kids riding bikes in Sabina, OH never signal their turns or slowing down/stopping. They turn, they stop, they slow down and the drivers of cars, trucks, motorcycles and other bikes behind them have no idea what they are about to do and often come close to running over them! THIS IS DANGEROUS!
To turn RIGHT on a bike, you need to put your left arm out, bend it UP 90º, and that tells the person behind you “I am turning right”.
If you are turning LEFT, you put your left arm straight out. The person behind you should know, they are about to turn left.
Last, if you are slowing down or stopping, don’t just suddenly do it, alert those behind you that you are stopping by putting your left arm out and bending your arm DOWN at 90º and they will know you are about to slow down and watch out.
This is something to do when you head to and from the bike path too. You can always let those behind you know you are about to slow down. Then take your bike OFF THE PATH so other riders don’t hit your bike.
Also remember to say ”Passing on your LEFT” when going around walkers, runners or other bikers.
Walkers and runners, you need to stay on the RIGHT side of the path. Not sure why, but locally in Sabina, there are a lot of those who walk the path on the left. That is wrong. Stay right. Please.
Here’s some photos to help you remember these rules. Stay well, stay active, stay safe, and stay ALIVE! Then share this info with others and teach it to your kids and grandkids!
