❄️ Trail Safety Update – Thermal Belt Rail Trail ❄️

Recent winter weather has left portions of the Thermal Belt Rail Trail covered in snow and ice. Ongoing cold temperatures over the next few days will make it difficult for these conditions to improve anytime soon.

This morning, there was a serious bicycle accident on the trail in Forest City. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery for the individual involved.

We know how much everyone loves getting out on the trail, but conditions remain slick and heavily iced in places. Please use your best judgment, consider postponing trips if possible, and take extra precautions if you do head out.

Your safety matters. We’ll continue to share updates as conditions change. 💙

⚠️Attention Thermal Belt Rail Trail Users 🌳

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, our beloved trail has faced significant challenges. An unfathomable number of trees have fallen along the 13.5-mile stretch from mile 0 to 4.5, making this section impassable. Many in our community are still without power, and countless individuals are working tirelessly to restore essential services.

During this time, we encourage everyone to use the trail south of Highway 64 as you begin to return to your normal activities. ⚠️However, for your safety, avoid the north end of the trail (miles 0-4.5) until further notice.⚠️

Let’s all stay safe, exercise caution, and bring our best patience as we navigate through these unprecedented challenges together. Thank you for your understanding!

**UPDATE | NOVEMBER 1ST, 2024**

Exciting Update: The Trail is Open!

We are pleased to announce that the Thermal Belt Rail Trail is now open in its entirety! However, we urge everyone to exercise caution, especially on the northern end, as there is still significant cleanup work to be done along the sides of the trail.

Enjoy your time out there, and thank you for your patience as we continue to restore the area! ❤️ Stay strong, everyone!

🚧⚠️ Update on our trail maintenance:

Our contractor had a productive week trimming back the foliage on the first two miles on the TBRT, from Mile 0 at Gilkey to Bechtler Mint at Mile 2. They plan to go another 2 miles this coming week, but the section behind the Carpenter Design facility (the old Broyhill plant) is quite thick, so this work may extend into a 3rd week of thinning the canopy. Sections of the trail between MM 2 and MM 4 may be closed for this work.
