Falls can have serious consequences as we age. Increase your summer activities, include and improve on physical strength and balance for fall prevention.

While it is possible to prevent some falls, exercises that focus on balance can minimize the risk of fall and injury.

A qualified instructor will introduce you to specialized simple fitness training programs to understand the importance of fall prevention. With individual supervision, you will learn the correct way to change the outcome of a catastrophic fall.

A fall may be minor, leading only to bruising and inflammation. But some can cause broken bones, traumatic brain injury in adults over 65 years of age, and even death.

Learn to fall while reducing the hard impact with a roll fall. Avoid the impact of landing on bone joint to that of a soft tissue landing.

Maneuvering the body into the fall with loose and not ‘stiffened’ bodies reduces the fall impact.

"I joined Shirleen’s Yoga and Tai Chi class at the Lifetime Wellness Center in August 2004. Through Shirleen’s class leadership I was introduced to a “holistic” approach to wellness that included strength training, flexibility, balance, and educational hand-outs. Shirleen’s voice tone brought a spiritual calmness as she introduced mantra’s, “honor your restrictions” and/or “respect your limitations”.

While visiting my family in 2005 I fractured my leg. Following surgery and rehab I returned home to heal. Shirleen introduced me to water yoga and encouraged chiropractic and massage therapy. Her knowledge of healing and continued encouragement assisted in the long journey of physical rehabilitation.

Shirleen’s yoga classes were always evolving. We were introduced to new routines such as Shibashi-18 movements of Qigong Tai Chi for improved balance and Yoga; In addition to structural body alignment, improved circulation, mind, body, and spiritual relaxation. CET 1 + 9 (pain elimination technique therapy by Dr. John Char) of Honolulu, Hawaii was introduced.

Although Covid changed life at the Lifetime Wellness Center, Shirleen continued yoga/tai chi classes online. Upon reopening, I was able to work on balance and strength training as a senior through chair-oriented programs designed by Shirleen.

Currently, I continue to benefit from Shirleen’s gifts through balance and yoga group exercises from Slim and Tone Fitness & Wellness studio at Rural Retreat, Virginia. Please join us!"

SLIM AND TONE APRIL’S FB TESTIMONIAL

"WHEN I STARTED WORKING WITH SHIRLEEN 2.5 YEARS AGO, I HAD LIMITED STAMINA AND LITTLE - SENSE OF BALANCE. I COULDN’T STAND FROM A SEATED POSITION WITHOUT USING MY HANDS TO PUSH OFF. I WAS UNABLE TO STAND ON ONE FOOT LONGER THAN IT TOOK TO TAKE STEPS, AND MY GAIT WAS UNSTEADY.

I CAME OUT OF POST SURGICAL PHYSICAL THERAPY WITH THE RECOMMENDATION THAT I TAKE A BALANCE CLASS. AT THIS POINT, I HAD BROKEN 12 BONES FROM FALLS OVER THE PREVIOUS 20 YEARS, INCLUDES HIP, STERNUM AND PELVIS.

SHIRLEEN STARTED WHERE I WAS AND SLOWLY, STEADILY, LED ME FROM THE MOST BASIC MOVES TO INCREASED LEVELS OF PROFICIENCY. THE PROGRAMS EXERCISES ARE DESIGNED TO IMPROVE CORE AND BACK FOR MUSCULAR ENDURANCE; UPPER – LOWER BODY’S AND FALL PREVENTION EXERCISES WERE INCORPORATED USING TAI-CHI AND YOGA, FOCUSING ON THE BODY’S POSTURAL STRUCTURE FOR ALIGNMENT / COORDINATION THROUGH DIRECTIONAL CHANGES IN MOVEMENT.

SHIRLEEN ENCOURAGED ME TO STRIVE FOR INCREASED BALANCE LEVELS WITHOUT COMPROMISING MY LIMITATIONS. TODAY, I HAVE IMPROVED COORDINATION.

· SIT TO STAND-WITH ARMS CROSSED OR EXTENDED

· STAND ON ONE FOOT FOR AS LONG AS 30 SECONDS

· HAVE A SMOOTHER GAIT

· KNOW HOW TO TAKE STEPS TO RECOVER BALANCE TO PREVENT POTENTIAL FALL / INJURY.

· BEST OF ALL, I HAVE NOT HAD A BONE-BREAKING INJURY SINCE STARTING A BALANCE PROGRAM WITH SLIM AND TONE FITNESS & WELLNESS.

FALL PREVENTION BALANCE AND COORDINATION group exercise setting IS NOW HERE!
