I love Roy Rogers!

Remembering Roy Rogers

(July 6, 1911 – July 6, 1998)

He entered the world as Leonard Franklin Slye, a boy from Cincinnati, Ohio—the Queen City kid who would one day earn the title “King of the Cowboys.”

Roy’s beginnings were simple. His family lived on a houseboat along Duck Run in Adams County, where he first discovered his love for music, learning to yodel and call square dances. After leaving high school, he worked in a shoe factory beside his father before deciding his heart belonged to the wide-open West.

In 1934, he co-founded the Sons of the Pioneers, a group whose timeless songs, “Cool Water” and “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” would become part of America’s musical heritage. Just three years later, Republic Pictures offered him $75 a week and a new stage name. In honor of Will Rogers, he chose “Rogers”—though to his mother, he was always Leonard.

From there, his star never dimmed. Roy Rogers appeared in more than a hundred films, alongside his trusty sidekick Gabby Hayes in 65 of them, embodying the image of the singing cowboy. With Trigger, his golden palomino, and his ever-kind smile, Roy became a beloved symbol of honesty, courage, and joy.

On July 6, 1998, at the age of 86, Roy Rogers took his final bow. Yet his legacy rides on—a cowboy hero forever etched in America’s heart. 🤠❤️🎶
