I was terrified to work out after having two miscarriages…
I was pregnant again, and for the 3rd time, terrified of what could possibly end in another miscarriage.
Even after the first trimester, when it was considered “safe”, I was still terrified to do something that could potentially harm the baby so I refused to work out.
I was inactive that entire pregnancy - which was my 1st successful pregnancy with my oldest, now 8 years old.
I became pregnant again within 5 months of having her and was fearful again of miscarriage or doing something wrong so I didn't workout that pregnancy either!
I became pregnant again 3 years later, with my 3rd child, 2017, and was finally NOT afraid to lift.
So, why am I telling you this?
I was afraid to workout while I was pregnant with baby 1 and 2 because I didn’t know the potential risks involved (there was none, for me. I was healthy and not high-risk. I was just afraid).
If you research pregnancy and fitness 8 years ago, there was literally almost nothing available. It wasn’t really talked about and because it wasn’t talked about, there wasn’t much information on what to do or not to do when you’re pregnant, let alone a pregnant ATHLETE.
Most doctors don’t recommend lifting over 20 pounds during pregnancy or don’t get your heart rate over 140 bpm or you shouldn’t run while pregnant, and so on.. (so many MYTHS!)
There is now SO much more information and certifications available about lifting pre/post-natal and for athletes specifically.
There are qualified/certified people who CAN help keep you on track during your pre/post-natal journey.. from Pelvic Floor PT's to Certified Coaches.
Be careful though.. just because you see an “influencer” lifting while pregnant or postpartum does NOT make them an expert on how to coach other pre/post-natal women.. and be careful with those cookie cutter programs. No two pregnant women are alike and their training shouldn’t be either..
There are SO many variables to consider during pregnancy and postpartum.
Hire a coach who is qualified to help you and your specific needs.
What are your experiences with training pre/post-natal? Did you have a coach?
