If your kid hides behind your leg at every front door on Halloween, read this.

Trick-or-treat is a lot for a shy kid.

New doors. New faces. Grown-ups in masks.

So you wonder if they are ready for anything new.

Here is what I have learned in 28 years.

Shy kids do not freeze because of the thing.

They freeze because of the unknown.

So take the unknown away.

Meet the teacher first.

Get a tour.

Stay in the room the whole time.

By the time it starts, nothing is new anymore.

Shy kids are exactly who a good class is for.

One partner at a time is how they make friends.

We made a quick checklist for ages 4 to 12.

Check the ones that sound like your kid.

"I don't want to go" usually does not mean what you think.

Screen time is all over the news again this year.

But here is the part nobody talks about.

Getting them off the screen and out the door.

A lot of the time, "I don't want to go" really means "I don't want to stop."

Stop the show. Stop the game. Stop the fun thing they are doing right now.

So don't argue with it.

Agree first. "I hear you. Some days I don't feel like going either."

Ask one question. "What part don't you feel like doing?"

Then hold the line, calm. "We still go. That's what we do on class days."

No lecture. Just the plan.

I have four sons. All four earned a black belt. Off days and all.

I put the exact words on one page, plus what to ask after class.

Which means sometime before lunch you will hear it.

"I'm bored."

If your kid has a lot of energy, a long day at home can feel very long.

Here is a tip for tomorrow.

Before you ask them to sit still, give the energy somewhere to go.

Run. Jump. Race to the mailbox.

Then ask.

That is why every class we teach starts with movement.

And if tomorrow has you thinking it is time to try something new, you are not alone.

Some moms want a kid who listens.

Some want a shy kid to make friends.

Some say, "I just want them to have a good time."

All three are good reasons.

The real question is if your kid is ready.

Two weeks from tonight, your kid will be running house to house in the dark.

On Halloween, one word matters more than any other.

"Stop."

At the curb. At the street. The second you say it.

Here is the thing.

You cannot teach that on Halloween night.

You teach it now, as a game.

Play Go and Freeze in the living room.

"Go" means march in place.

"Freeze" means statue.

Switch fast. Keep it silly.

Cheer the second they freeze.

Play it a few nights this week and next.

By Halloween, "freeze" is a game they already know how to win.

It is the same loop our black belt instructors run in every kids class.

Hear it. Do it. Get it right.

Is your kid ready for a real class?

If they have been kicking the couch in a Power Rangers costume all week, you are probably wondering.

Power Rangers made the top Halloween costume list again this year.

And every fall, moms ask me some version of the same thing.

"Is he ready?"

Here is what I tell them.

Ready does not mean calm.

Ready does not mean they sit still.

A lot of energy is not a problem.

It just needs somewhere to go.

What matters is simple.

Can they follow one short instruction, like "touch your toes"?

Can they stay with a teacher for 30 minutes, with you in the room?

That is most of it.

We made a quick checklist for ages 4 to 12.

It takes about 2 minutes.

If your kid wants to quit something a few weeks in, watch the playoffs this week.

Even the best hitters in baseball get a hit about 3 times out of 10.

Nobody tells them to quit in October.

Kids are the same.

I have taught kids for 28 years.

Over and over, I have watched parents let a kid quit right before the progress shows up.

Here is the truth.

The off days come first.

It is not going to be a straight line up.

I have four sons.

All four earned a black belt.

That was the house rule.

Off days and all.

You don't let him stop brushing his teeth because he doesn't feel like it.

Same thing here.

I wrote down the exact words to say the next time your kid says "I don't want to go."

Your kid knows every word to the KPop Demon Hunters songs.

But "shoes on" takes five tries.

Same kid. Same ears.

So what is going on?

I have taught kids in Round Rock for 28 years.

Here is what I see every week.

Kids remember what they do over and over.

And what feels good to get right.

They sing that song again and again.

They move to it.

Every time they nail a line, it feels great.

"Shoes on" gets said once, from the other room, while they are busy.

So flip it.

Say their name first.

Give one short instruction.

They do it with their body.

You cheer the second they get it right.

Then do it again.

Listening is not a lecture. It is a loop.

We built a 5 minute game on that loop.

She wrote one word on the board.

Lots of her kids could not copy it down.

Now everyone is pointing fingers.

Screens. Schools. Parents.

I have taught kids in Round Rock for 28 years.

Here is what I have seen.

Most kids are not bad listeners.

They just have not practiced listening.

It is a skill.

Like riding a bike.

Here is how you practice it.

Give one short instruction.

They do it with their body.

You cheer the second they get it right.

Then do it again.

Kids learn by doing.

And getting it right feels good, so they want another turn.
