Blind and Visually Impaired Fencing Welcome to Fencing for the blind and visually impaired. We refer to it as ParaBlind Fencing for competition. My name is Maestro Gary L. Murray Sr. Second.

I have been fencing and coaching for over 40 years. I recently sold my club (Round Rock Fencing Center) that I started in 1986, to my two assistant coaches. I retired from full time coaching, then helped start the Blind and Visually Impaired Fencing (referred to as Parablind Fencing) program in January 2023. I am co-chair of the International ParaBlind Fencing Task Force with a dual mission. First, to spread Parablind Fencing around the world. Get ParaBlind Fencing approved as an official event in the Paralympics. Our task force is currently working on the international rules for ParaBlind Fencing, along with the Glossary of Terms.

Heart of Texas Fencing Academy conducted the first community blind fencing demonstration last night at the Northwest Recreation Center in Northwest Austin, Texas. We were expecting 6-8 participants and ended up with 24. Yes. 24. Then, to our amazement, all 24 signed up to attend classes. We will be setting dates and times this week. What an amazing event. Our staff and I were just floored and speechless. We have made more than just a mark on the blind fencing world. Thanks to the committee members and coaches who made this all possible.

Today is the 2-year anniversary of starting Fencing For The Blind And Visually Impaired in the Austin, Texas area. Thank you to Pat Pound, Cindy Bachofer, and Regina Budet. Along with myself, these three ladies formed our first-ever committee. We got to work right away with our firs Zoom meeting and never looked back. Pat and I are part of an international task force to encourage blind fencing around the world and eventually get it approved as an official event in the Paralympics. I, along with Christina Massiala-Vak. co-chair the task force. We are making changes all over the U.S. and soon, the world. Thank you to everyone involved up to this point, and thank you to the staff at the USFCA for taking us under their wing. Happy New Year to everyone involved. If you know of anyone with any type of visual impairment, tell them about our program. Thank you.
