📱 Don't Let Summer Screen Time Getting Out of Hand?
With summer routines loosening up, screen time can skyrocket. At VOLT, we believe structure doesn’t need to disappear just because school’s out. We’ve created a Screen Time Strategy Guide to help families stay connected, focused, and in control—without the power struggle.
Here are 4 VOLT strategies to try this summer:
🔹 1. Create a Family Screen Time Agreement
Establish shared expectations around device use—for everyone in the home, parents included. This agreement might include no screens at dinner, designated tech-free hours, or daily limits. When the whole family commits, the strategy becomes collaborative, not punitive. Make sure EVERYONE Signs it!
🔹 2. Connect Screen Time to Their Goals
Help kids understand the “why” behind boundaries. If they’re working on a summer reading challenge, practicing a sport, or building a new skill, show them how mindful screen use protects the time and energy they need to grow. Purpose drives discipline.
🔹 3. Praise Self-Control, Not Just Obedience
Instead of “Thanks for putting it away when I asked,” try: “I noticed you stopped your game even though you wanted to keep playing—that shows real self-control.” This builds intrinsic motivation and emotional regulation over time.
🔹 4. Replace, Don’t Just Restrict
Don’t just say “less screen time”—offer compelling alternatives. Plan outdoor adventures, creative projects, or social meetups. Replacing passive screen use with meaningful engagement leads to more cooperation and fewer meltdowns. Have them make a list of alternatives. This will help empower them to replace screen time with something they already listed.
