Here’s a tip for you guys chasing mature bucks. I have found that some older bucks do not like following mowed paths through cover like most other deer (note that I aside SOME, not all). They want to have some cover right up against their sides and mowed paths are just too wide and too open for them. You can really direct a lot of their movements with paths that you create with a garden sprayer and herbicide however.

This photo is of such a path that I have had on my property for several years. The bare dirt is about 15” wide and these weeds are about shoulder high. The path leads from thick bedding cover through this weedy area to a large clover plot. I was in this area yesterday setting a trail camera and this path is just covered with deer tracks. It is a literal deer highway. Note the ladder stand in the big tree in the upper left of the photo.

I spray this path every year in the spring when new vegetation is about a foot high using glyphosate and whatever preemergent herbicide I happen to have on hand. It works like a charm! I am always looking for ways to turn good stands into great stands and this trick is one of the ways I do that. HERBICIDE TIP OF THE DAY

Seeing grass invade your clover?

Mowing is often the best solution for managing grass competition in established clover fields, but sometimes selective herbicides are needed to maintain a healthy stand.

Clethodim remains one of the best tools available for selectively removing grasses from clover plots without harming the clover itself.

The key is timing.

Clethodim works best on young, actively growing grasses. The larger and more mature the grass becomes, the harder it is to achieve effective control.

For best results:

- Spray early
- Follow label directions
- Use the proper adjuvant
- Keep grasses from competing with your clover
