USA Women's Bandy

USA Women's Bandy The OFFICIAL page for USA Women's Bandy Bandy is played on a sheet of ice the size of a soccer field.

For those who are unfamiliar with the sport of bandy, (which is most people in North America!) it can best be described as a combination of hockey and soccer. While the equipment very much resembles hockey, (including skates and sticks) the rules are more akin to soccer. Each team has 10 skaters plus a goalie, and the object of the game is to shoot the ball, (which is similar in size to a hockey p

uck) into the opponent's net, (which measures 7 feet tall and 11 feet wide). This sport is often referred to as "the fastest game on ice" thanks to the amount of free space that skaters have to work with. Bandy is hugely popular in the Scandinavian countries and in eastern Russia. Based on the number of participating athletes, it is the second most popular winter sport in the entire world, and there is a movement towards its inclusion in future Winter Olympic Games. In the US, bandy is played exclusively at the Guidant John Rose Minnesota OVAL, in Roseville, MN. This facility is the only regulation size bandy rink in all of North America. The US Women's National Bandy Team was founded in 2004. The team competes in Women's World Championships, which take place biannually at various locations around the globe. Additionally, the USWNT competes in the American Bandy Association First Division each winter at the OVAL, as the only all-female team in the league.

USWRBL Players of the Week 🌟
The weather in Minneapolis was smokin' hot on Tuesday night, and so was the action inside the St. Louis Park Rec Center, as the US Women's Rink Bandy League entered Week Two of the 2026 season.
In the first of the two matches, Viggen unleashed an offensive onslaught, piling up eight goals en route to an 8-2 win over the A-Team. Viggen's Lily Pachl (pictured in first photo) was chosen as the Player of the Game after notching three goals and adding an assist in her team's victory. Pachl - who made her rink bandy dubut last year - is home for the summer after playing her first year of NCAA Division-I ice hockey at Cornell University... and she cited playing BANDY as one of the things she was most looking forward to this summer! Awesome!

The second game was a goal-scoring affair for both squads with the Green Monkeys eventually edging out the Kodiaks, 7-6. When the ice chips settled, Kodiaks newcomer, Katie Josephson (second photo) was chosen as the POG. After making her rink bandy debut on June 2nd, Josephson spent the ensuing week practicing her stickhandling skills at home. It paid off, as the rookie skater picked up an assist for her team in the seesaw battle. Way to go!

US Women’s National Team veteran and FIB Athletes’ Committee Chair, Becky Draper had a vision. And then she made it happen.
Last night in Plymouth, Minnesota a group of young female athletes, ages 12 to 16, hit the ice to take part in the first night of the USA Bandy Girls’ Development Camp. The event was envisioned and organized entirely by Becky - and she was on hand to serve as the head coach for the group’s first session.
It’s no secret that kids generally don’t play bandy in America; the sport is almost exclusively played by adult hockey players who pick it up either as a recreational option for exercise, or to continue their competitive athletic careers once their collegiate or professional hockey journeys come to an end. In order to genuinely grow the sport in the United States, (and close the gap with the Scandinavian countries in international competition) the American youth market needs to come into play. And that’s exactly what Becky is doing.
In last night’s hourlong session, the girls participated in a myriad of flow drills - involving skating, passing, and shooting - before ending the practice with a fun scrimmage. There were lots of smiles on the young skaters’ faces as they challenged themselves to try this new game and had a blast doing it!
The program will run for the next four Sundays, with each session taking place from 6:30-7:30pm at the Plymouth Ice Center. There are a few spots still available - come join Becky and the crew and be a part of the future of USA Women’s Bandy!

Tuesday Nights Are For The Girls. 💅
Two nights ago, the US Women’s Rink Bandy League began its fourth season, with two action-packed tilts at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.
In the evening’s first match, the defending USWRBL Champion Kodiaks skated to a 4-4 tie with Viggen. Then, in the late game, the Green Monkeys defeated the A-Team by a score of 10-6. Both games featured sensational skating skills, great goals, and stellar saves. And most importantly, it was a FUN night filled with two hours of camaraderie, competition, and exercise!
Also worth noting is that there’s an impressive crop of new players who joined the league this summer. A total of seven women made their rink bandy debuts on Tuesday night! And after stepping off the ice at the end of the matches, the overwhelming consensus among the rookies was, “Wow! That was a blast! We’ll definitely be back next week!”

We Back! 😎
After a 2.5-month break from the ice, members of the US women’s bandy program got back to work tonight. The ladies dug out their equipment and made the arduous journey to Eden Prairie, MN during rush hour to punch the clock for the first Liberty League session of summer 2026.
Any apparent rust was brushed off early in this workout. The gals looked pretty darn good moving the ball against their big, fast male opponents. Sure, the boys won the scrimmage, 5-3, but it was a solid return and important first step in building towards the winter season and (hopefully) meaningful international competition in 2026-27.
As is clearly seen here, the program’s social media presence also came roaring back tonight. The admin has admittedly been bunz since Finland. (She’s been busy, okay? And she is tired.) But now that summer is upon us, there’s more time, rest, natural access to vitamin D, and general joy to be had.. which leads to creative inspiration and really cool American bandy content that the world has been deprived of since mid January. Get excited, people, because it’s gonna be GREAT. Or at least it’ll be okay. … At the very least, it’ll be better than, you know, nothing.
I digress…
As always, HUGE thanks to longtime USA Women’s Bandy supporter, Jeff “Chief” Arundel for organizing and funding another summer of Liberty League Bandy, in conjunction with the US Rink Bandy League. The Eden Prairie Community Center will be THE place to be this summer. Oh yeah. We’ll see you again soon!

⁉️ What is This?:
Held on Sunday evenings, this program will introduce athletes to the sport of bandy while building on their hockey foundation. Players will learn the fundamentals, rules, and strategies of bandy, all while continuing to develop skating and game awareness in a fun and supportive environment.

Bandy played on a hockey rink has many similarities with hockey, but it is more free flowing. With 4 skaters on the ice for each team, no offsides or icing, no use of the bandy stick to impede opponents, and minimal stoppages, the game emphasizes creativity, skating, speed, movement, and teamwork. It’s a great way for athletes to get a fresh perspective on of the ice.

One of the goals of this program is to build a pathway where bandy opens the door to unique international opportunities, such as giving athletes the chance to compete in global events like Youth and Senior World Championships and World Cups, progress to local senior-level competition and leagues, and potentially pursue opportunities to play professionally abroad.

Whether your player is new to bandy, looking to try something different, or dabbled a bit, this program is a great way to learn, improve, and have fun!

📈 Structure:
Our goal is to have approximately 20-24 skaters and 2 goalies per session. Each session will include 1 hour on the ice: 30 minutes focused on skill development such as shooting, flow drills, regrouping, steering, and more and followed by 30 minutes of game time.

👩 Age:
2013 or older, experienced skaters.

🏑 Equipment:
Player sticks will be available to borrow during sessions. Players also have the option to purchase sticks, $30 for wood or $60 for carbon. Skaters use the same equipment for hockey (some bandy players do not wear a chest protector) only elbow pads. Bring a light and dark jersey.

🥅 Goalies:
Goalie gloves will be available to borrow throughout the program. Goalies may use their standard hockey equipment, minus stick, blocker and glove.

🗓️ Dates:
Sundays, June 7th, 14th, 28th, July 12th, 19th; all at 6:30PM

📍Location:
Plymouth Ice Center (PIC), Rink B

📥 Registration:
$50 per player for all five sessions. Spots are limited to 30 participants, once full, additional registrants will be placed on a waitlist.

🇺🇸 Instructors:
Current and previous USA Bandy Women’s National Team players.
