Shawangunk Ridge Trail Run

Hey folks, we're super excited to bring you the 12th edition of the SRT Run -- and we're ready to rock and roll on race day!

The volunteer roster is filled out, and we've bolstered the leadership team with SRT veterans to ensure this is once again a smooth operation. Trail Conference volunteers have been out on the course making sure it's clear and marked and ready for you. The permitting process is complete, with nearly 20 insurance certificates issues to the various landowners and agencies who manage the patchwork of public and private lands through which the SRT wends its way. This year's winner's prizes -- traditional Navajo knives -- are on hand, ready for the first male, female, and non-binary in each division, as well as the oldest finisher, too ("old is cool").

But if you'd like to run, you better sign up soon -- we close registration five days before the race in order to prevent any last minute administrative issues. No exceptions.

And we're sorry to report that the 1/2 marathon is sold out. No exceptions here, either.

Also: we've got a final trail maintenance trip planned for this Sunday at High Point State Park to do some trimming near the start of the 70-miler and could use a couple of helpers. Please DM us if you'd like more info

The Open Space Institute has acquired the historic 440-acre Mt. Cathalia property in Ellenville for addition to Minnewaska State Park Preserve.

Call for volunteers!

Hey everyone, with the race one month away, we're looking for a few more race day volunteers on Saturday September 12:
- chill at one of our luxuriously appointed checkpoints to track runners passing through (you don't have to feed them)

- help eat and serve pizza at the finish line

- sweep team members needed, on foot and on bicycle, to trail the back of the pack while maintaining radio contact with SAR teams for extraction (if needed)

- we'd love to have a marketing/PR expert posting race updates with pix and live action videos if you know how to do that (we don't)

Also, we're organizing some trail work outings to clean up parts of the trail in the southern sections (near Port Jervis)
- August 20 and September 6 are two possible dates

Also, if you're interested in trail work, the NYNJ Trail Conference is looking for volunteers to adopt sections of the SRT and help us take care of this race course/regional connector trail

This year, the winners' prizes are traditional bone-tipped knives crafted by Cybil Smith, who is a Navajo artisan.

We have twelve knives for the race.

For each division in the race, a knife will be presented to the first female, first male, and first non-binary athlete.

Additionally, for each division in the race, a knife will be presented to the oldest finisher.

2016 SRT 70-mile champion Zack Price is taking on the 358-mile Long Path, and he's reached mile 100 already on a blistering 60-mile/day pace despite 90F temperatures. Today he was paced by 2023-2024 SRT 70-mile champion Jordan Snyder. And he's being crewed by his wife, Elizabeth. When I caught up with him this afternoon, Zack was in great spirits, right on schedule, very steady, and very organized.

In about 5 miles, he will be back on the SRT, which he knows quite well.

Thanks to everyone who came out, we filled approximately forty (40) trash bags with refuse on the SRT/Long Path near Ellenville. We figure this trash dates back almost 50 years!

We'll schedule another outing later this summer to clean up a few remaining scraps, but as you can tell from the pix, this is a huge improvement.

In other SRT news, thanks to everyone who donated, we raised the $4,900 needed for the Trail Conference to kick off the trail design project which will move the SRT/Long Path off of Mamakating Road in Wurtsboro.

Attention runners, we have gotten reports of creepy dolls back on the course. We also found a pile of fur with no sign of the animal that used to wear it. Probably no connection, but in the spirit of full disclosure we thought you should know

Note: this is on the 70-mile course. Creepy dolls have not historically been an issue for 30-milers and 1/2 marathoners, as far as we know

Congratulations to Andy Garrison for being recognized by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference with the Raymond Torrey Lifetime Achievement Award, presented here with a beautiful plaque (created and donated by Kim Levinsky) by former recipient John Magerlein and volunteer manager Katie Kourakos. Andy is a legend in the trail community for the work he's done on the Long Path, which he fell in love with while hiking it with his son around 20 years ago. Since then he's worked as a maintainer and chain sawyer, helped build the Shawangunk Ridge Trail and the Long Path reroute on Romer Mountain, and been instrumental negotiating several land parcel acquisitions and easements which have strengthened and permanently preserved the the trail in many sections, as well as significantly reducing road walk sections. He's also been a huge catalyst for use of the trail, creating the Friends of the Long Path facebook group, and constantly reaching out to thru-hikers, thru-runners, and section-hikers with information and advice., including myself back in 2013 when I thru-ran the trail.

Raymond Torrey was a big deal back in the day, founding the Trail Conference, creating a hiking community through his column "The Long Brown Path" in the New York Post, standing up to Robert Moses to protect sensitive lands in Long Island from overdevelopment, and promoting the idea of the Long Path and documenting the route, which would allow Trail Conference volunteers to begin building it years later.

Today Andy is the senior volunteer in charge of the Long Path and actively working on multiple projects to improve and promote the trail, including a recent 100+acre transaction near the town of Middleburgh. You might encounter him running on the trails or at a race, as he is an avid trail and ultra-runner, having completed iconic races like Manitou's Revenge Ultramarathon (rumor has it he's signed up for the Shawangunk Ridge Trail Run)
