Every athlete wants to make the team.

Every athlete wants more speed, more strength, and more confidence when tryouts arrive.

🏒 T1AP Tip: Avoid Systemic Fatigue

The off-season is the time to improve your skills and build your body for next season. But more isn't always better.

One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is creating systemic fatigue. Simply put, when the brain and body are pushed too hard for too long without proper recovery, performance starts to decline. Speed slows down, strength gains stall, and training becomes less effective.

Training only works when recovery is part of the plan.

Coach Don recommends two non-consecutive rest days per week to allow the body and nervous system time to recover and adapt. Rest isn't taking a step backward. It's what allows your hard work to produce results.

Remember: The goal isn't to be at your best in June. The goal is to be at your best in February and March... when it matters most.

Water matters more than most hockey players realize.

Recovery, energy, explosiveness and endurance all start with hydration.

And trust us… coaches can tell who spent the weekend drinking soda, energy drinks and “whatever was in the vending machine.” 🫠

One of the most overlooked parts of athletic development isn’t in the gym.

It’s sleep.

There are countless reasons why sleep matters for athletes, but two of the biggest are recovery and skill development.

During deep sleep, the pituitary gland releases Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which helps the body rebuild muscle and supports bone growth.

At the same time, the brain is working too.

During REM sleep, the brain reorganizes and “resets,” helping athletes lock in the motor skills and movement patterns they practiced that day. That’s how muscle memory is built.

In other words:
The work doesn’t stop when practice ends.

Most athletes should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Consistently missing sleep can place a ceiling on athletic growth, recovery, reaction time, focus, and overall development.

Training hard matters.
