Somewhere along Highway 191 in Arizona’s White Mountains, a missed shot turned into a tradition that lasted nearly half a century. What started in the 1970s as one family missing a squirrel and sticking an arrow into a dead ponderosa pine slowly became a quiet challenge passed between bowhunters. How high can you put one? Over the years, arrows stacked up the trunk like notches in time, each one proof that someone stood there, looked up, and decided to try it. No rules, no prizes, no social media, just hunters, curiosity, and a shared place on the landscape. The tree finally came down in a winter storm in 2019, but the story didn’t. Stuff like this is why hunting culture is different.
