‼️ BREAKING — Heartbreaking news. The 8-year-old girl who was fighting a rare “brain-eating” amoeba believed to have been contracted while swimming in a Louisiana lake has died.
Just days ago, Lillian Smart was a little girl with a fever.
Friday, she spent her 8th birthday in the pediatric ICU as an entire community prayed for a miracle.
Today, her parents had to let the world know their little girl was gone.
“Last night Lillian ran from our arms to the arms of Jesus.”
It is difficult to comprehend how quickly everything changed.
Lillian started running a fever last Thursday. By Saturday, she was extremely sick and fatigued despite testing negative for COVID, flu and strep.
Then she began seeing double.
Her mother Rebecca noticed her pupils were different sizes and rushed her to the hospital.
Doctors initially believed they were dealing with bacterial meningitis.
Then came the frightening diagnosis: Naegleria fowleri, the rare amoeba commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba.”
Local reports said the Louisiana Department of Health confirmed the infection and said it was most likely acquired while swimming in Lake Claiborne shortly before Lillian became sick.
The amoeba can enter through the nose and travel to the brain, causing a devastating infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis.
Within days, Lillian was fighting for her life.
There were moments that gave her family hope.
She began making small movements with her arms and legs. Her pupils became smaller. Her family said doctors considered those neurological reactions encouraging.
Thousands of people began praying on my page and across the nation.
Churches opened their doors. People gathered for vigils. Businesses rallied around the family.
And then Friday came.
Lillian’s 8th birthday.
Instead of celebrating at home with her brothers, she spent it critically ill in the hospital.
Her parents revealed that the swelling in their daughter’s brain was significant.
Still, Daniel and Rebecca chose to celebrate her life and cling to their faith.
Then last night came the update everyone had been praying would never come.
“The injuries to her brain were too severe for her little body to recover from. Everyone did everything they could to keep her here.”
And then this devastated mom and dad asked a question I don’t know how any parent answers:
“How do we put one foot in front of the other without our girl?”
Even now, they say their faith remains their foundation.
“We didn’t get to keep our girl but we watched miracles happen on her behalf.”
And their thoughts are also with Lillian’s brothers.
“Pray for our boys. They are going to need it so much.”
