Exercise Tip of the Week: Modified Side Plank

This exercise is great for trunk strengthening and stabilization. A strong core is critical for maintaining good posture and facilitating proper body movement in everyday activities. Quick tips are:
- Ensure that your elbow is directly under your shoulder at a 90 degree angle
- Knees bent at 90 degrees as well so you are making a straight line with from the shoulders, hips, & ankles
- Pop the hips straight up, off the ground about 6 inches
- Engage the core & hold for 30 sec each side

Give it a try at the gym or in your living room

Exercise Tip of the Week: Bird Dog

Here are some cues as well as demonstration of how to not perform this exercise. The Bird Dog is a great exercise to strengthen the trunk and improve core stability. Give this exercise a try the next time you work on core or in between commercials in the living room!
- Do not let the leg lift above hip height/arm above shoulder height to avoid hyperextension
- At the same time, straighten & raise the opposite arm
- Do not let the shoulders & low back arch up
- Keep the head aligned with the spine in neutral position
- Keep the core engaged!
