Are you getting the most out of the program you already have?

Most athletes that are tempted to change programs or add additional training sessions, aren’t putting enough effort into the program they already have.

Research has even shown that most people greatly underestimate the weight or reps they’re capable of doing.

Even if your program is getting full effort, what about everything else on the list?

What would happen if you checked off all the boxes?

Nutrition ✅
Recovery ✅
Hydration ✅
Full effort in training and practice ✅

If you’re doing all of these things, it is unlikely that you need extra work.

If you’re doing all of these things consistently and still not making improvements, THEN it makes sense to add to or change your program.

But from years of experience, the answer is almost always- less (done intentionally) is more 💪🏼

When it comes to training for speed and agility there can be a lot of “fluff” added in…drills that look cool but aren’t necessarily effective.

Speed ladders and dot mats typically fall in this category for us.

Even when it comes to high quality drills, they can’t replace or replicate actually playing your sport. That takes priority always.

Then, develop a solid strength base + sprinting mechanics. The ability to accelerate, decelerate and change direction.

….wayyyy down the list is tapping your feet as quickly as possible and juking random cones.

Don’t complicate it. Double down on the basics.

When it comes to training and strength + conditioning, there’s always new research and evolving science to keep up with but a few things seem to stay simple + consistent.

Anything you’d add to the list??⬇️

How much should you be doing to improve performance??
Maybe less than you think!

We’re looking for a minimal effective dose. What is the least amount you can do with the MOST effort to give you the best results?

This isn’t found in extra lifting, lessons, etc.

This is doubling down on what you already have in front of you!

Prioritize being 100% focused on the task at hand whether it be practice or the weight room. Approach each with purpose and intent.

Then RECOVER and get ready to go again.

“Extra” isn’t beneficial if you’re not able to give it your all.

I once asked a high school football coach what he was doing for his team’s strength training.

He then pulls up an elaborate program written for an Olympian. Yes, an Olympic Games athlete whose JOB was to train and compete…. In track and field.

First, let me say that this program was probably too much volume even for a professional athlete 😅

But it was DEFINITELY unnecessary for high school athletes who most likely didn’t have the training base or time to benefit from the program.

A program ALONE will not have any benefit if you do not know how to implement, progress or modify it to fit your needs.

That program was written for the needs of a professional track athlete, not a high school football player.

The demands are different.
The training age is different.
The program should also be different.

You can run any program you want, but without guidance, direction and the ability to modify, you’re missing out on the benefit a strength coach and tailored program can provide.
