As a new coach, there are many things you would like to accomplish in your first 30 days, first year, and hopefully an incredible turnaround in 3 to 5 years. This season will be my fourth year as the Franklin County Boys Basketball varsity head coach. One of my main goals as a head coach is to increase our participation in out of season workouts.

We typically offer four to five workout sessions a week. A normal week consists of two morning sessions and three afternoon/evening workouts. I started the Breakfast Club program that begins at 7:00am and ends at 8:00am on Monday and Wednesday mornings. This is an opportunity for our guys to work on shooting and ball handling. Most coaches know that players don’t get enough shooting reps during a regular practice. So, we have provided a way for them to get shooting reps two hours per week outside of the regular practice sessions.

When we first started the Breakfast Club there might have been at most five to six players who would attend the morning session. Over the past few years we have seen an increase in attendance and it is steadily growing. What has been rewarding for me is to see the confidence that is being built in our team and individual players.

This morning we had 22 players attend practice. The most we have had is 24 and the least amount has been around 14 to 15. I am extremely proud of the young men who are buying into our culture. Yes, the expectations and standards have been set high, but the reward that is coming will be impactful for the program.

A lot of outsiders have opinions and I have no problem with that, but most have no idea the time, dedication, and commitment that goes into coaching. My staff and I pour so much into our players and program. I’m very grateful for my staff and without them none of this would be possible. They work just as hard as I do!

Not all players drive, so thank you to the parents who have bought in as well and for getting your child to early morning workouts. Players are only as good as the parents who push them to go the extra mile and coaches are only as good as the players that put in the extra work!
