BOYS : Jacob Watters - Bland 🐻

Bland County has produced some special athletes over the years, and Jacob Watters is one of the biggest baseball names to ever come out of the county. The former Bland Bear took his talent to West Virginia University, where he became a major arm for the Mountaineers and proved he could compete on a national stage. One of his biggest moments came when he struck out 15 batters against Texas, showing just how dominant he could be. His success at WVU eventually led to him being selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 4th round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He’s now with the Tampa Bay Rays and is recovering from Tommy John Surgery! The Bland County Legend is expected to make his return to the mound in August! From Bland County to college baseball and into the pros, Watters gave the Bears and his hometown a story to be proud of.

GIRLS : Alice Neal - Rocky Gap 🐐

On the basketball side, Alice Neal is a Rocky Gap legend whose name still belongs in the conversation with Bland County’s all-time greats. The former Rocky Gap standout took her game to Wake Forest, where she became a major piece of Demon Deacon women’s basketball history. Neal finished her college career with 1,214 points, 340 assists and 197 steals, becoming one of Wake Forest’s 1,000-point scorers. She was also part of Wake Forest’s historic 1987-88 team that earned the program’s first national ranking and reached the NCAA Tournament, while also earning First Team All-ACC Tournament honors in 1988. From Rocky Gap to the ACC stage, Alice Neal remains a true Bland County flashback name worth celebrating!
