Rocky Bottom Outdoors ...just a lazy little mountain village dating back to the turn of the century, nestled at the foot of SC's highest point, Sassafras Mountain (3563ft)

Following the expulsion of the Cherokees in 1838 Harris Powell, a Scotchman, secured title to 800 acres (3.2 km2) of land in the wild mountainous area of Pickens District on waters of Big Eastatoee River. He cleared a rich mountain valley on both sides of a clear trout creek. This area became known as Rocky Bottom.

I passed this lovely cascade when I was mountain biking on Horsepasture Road this week.

Years ago, John Cantrell, an operator of Sassafras Mountain Fire Tower, lived here. Every day he would climb to the top of the mountain then up the stairs of the 55' tower to take a look. Sometimes he'd go at night to spot and report fire glows.
