⚠️ IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR MARYLAND WEAR & CARRY PERMIT HOLDERS ⚠️

Since Maryland is a deeply blue state, many newer concealed carry students (especially non-business owners) are individuals who actively participate in public demonstrations and protests.

If that applies to you, this is critical information you need to understand:

Under Maryland law, you may NOT carry a handgun within 1,000 feet of a public demonstration, even if you have a valid Maryland Wear and Carry Permit.

📖 Legal Reference: Maryland Code, Criminal Law § 4-208

👉 Violation of this law is a misdemeanor, punishable by:
• Up to 1 year in jail
• And/or a fine of up to $1,000

Key Points You Must Know:

✔️ Law Enforcement Protocol:
Officers are generally required to notify you of the violation first and order you to leave the area or secure/dispose of the firearm.

✔️ Failure to Comply = Arrest Risk:
If you refuse to comply or remain in violation, you may be charged and prosecuted under this statute.

✔️ Permit Does NOT Override the Law:
Even with a valid Wear & Carry Permit, demonstrations are considered “prohibited places.”

⚠️ Important Note:
While there have been legal challenges (including a preliminary injunction in 2023), Maryland State Police continue to treat demonstrations as restricted areas. Laws and enforcement policies can evolve, so always stay updated.

Maryland's Handgun Permit Boom – Thank a Republican Governor!

If you obtained your Maryland Wear and Carry Handgun Permit after June 2022, you have a Republican governor to thank for it.

Maryland was once notorious for having some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. Before this major shift, nearly all my students seeking Maryland Wear and Carry Handgun Permits were business owners, self-employed professionals, investors, CEOs, and other high-level executives — because unless you had political connections or a compelling “good and substantial reason,” your application was almost certainly denied. Hundreds, if not thousands, of qualified applicants were rejected.

At that time, out of a population exceeding 6 million, fewer than 15,000 Marylanders were licensed to carry a handgun.

Then, everything changed.

A Game-Changing Supreme Court Ruling & Republican Leadership
In June 2022, a landmark 6-3 U.S. Supreme Court decision struck down New York’s restrictive gun control law, affirming that the Second Amendment protects your right to carry a firearm in public.

Recognizing this as a victory for constitutional rights, Maryland’s Republican Governor, Lawrence J. Hogan Jr., acted immediately — removing the state’s restrictive “May Issue” policies and making Maryland a "Shall Issue" state as of July 5, 2022.

If you obtained your Maryland Handgun Permit after June 2022, you have a Republican governor to thank for it.

Maryland was once known for having the most strictest gun control laws in the country. Before this change, nearly all of my students who took Maryland Wear and Carry Handgun Permit classes were business owners, self-employed individuals, investors, CEOs, and other affluent professionals. Many others, despite their qualifications -- hundreds, if not thousands of applicants were denied permits. At that time, out of a population of more than 6 million, there were fewer than 15,000 licensed handgun permit holders in the entire state of Maryland.

In response to this ruling, Maryland’s Republican Governor, Lawrence J. Hogan Jr., lifted the state's restrictive policies on issuing permits to carry concealed weapons, a change that took effect on July 5, 2022.

Fast forward to today, and in less than two years, there are now over 140,000 Wear and Carry Handgun Permit holders in Maryland. Interestingly, in a state where Democrats are the majority, many of my new students, post-Supreme Court ruling, are Democrats themselves. Despite their party's general support for stricter gun control, they are ironically acquiring handguns and permits to carry. If you’re among these newly licensed holders, congratulations: your permit to carry a concealed handgun was made possible by a Republican governor.

Renewed my Texas LTC for Another 5 Years!

I used to teach "Concealed Handgun License" (CHL) classes in Texas. What was known as CHL then, has since been renamed "License to Carry" (LTC) in 2016. LTC allows holders the option to carry openly or concealed. Then on September 2021, Texas has allowed permitless carry, meaning no license is needed to carry a handgun. Despite this, there are many benefits to obtaining an LTC.

Taking a class to get a license educates individuals on state laws, legal repercussions, responsible firearm use, and enhances proficiency and accuracy. Additionally, having a license can make interactions with law enforcement smoother and is advantageous when traveling to other states that recognize Texas permits. Texas LTC is valid in 37 states.

Proper training significantly enhances safety and proficiency with a handgun. I can easily spot the difference between someone with proper handgun training and someone without as it is readily apparent.

Just because you have guns doesn’t mean you know how to use them. I’m astounded there's no Range Safety Officer around to ask this person to leave. It’s painfully obvious this individual hasn’t had any handgun training, breaks every safety rules, and can’t be bothered with eye or ear protection. He's not just a threat to himself, but to everyone around him (except, of course, for his colossal paper target, which he couldn't even manage to hit).

And if that’s an instructor talking and filming, he should be right next to his student, giving him several good slaps on the head—and slapping himself a few times too, smh.
