Have you been wanting to work in the fly fishing industry? Here is a great opportunity. Galveston’s first fly fishing shop is now interviewing for multiple positions, part- and full-time.
The two main requirements for working in the fly shop:
1. Applicants should be actively participating in the sport of fly fishing. Which means you are fly fishing on a regular basis.
2. Applicants should be enthusiastic about helping others. It is what we do for our customers and our fellow staff members that makes us successful.
If you have never worked in retail I can teach you. And while a fly shop is a great place to expand your fly fishing knowledge, I need staff members to bring some fly fishing experience to the job because our customers will expect us to know things about the sport, and even more so about the products we sell. There is a great deal of on-the-job learning and I try to make it fun. We will all work as a team at the shop, sharing the workload and learning from each other.
Some of the duties and responsibilities are:
- Greet and engage with customers, and assist them as needed in the store, on the phone, and by email.
- Grow your product and fishing knowledge so that you can answer customers’ questions and assist them by providing details.
- Maintain a clean and well organized store.
- Check in product shipments, restock and merchandise displays, and conduct inventory counts.
- Use the Point-of-Sale system to complete customer purchases and to look up items.
- Rig fly reels to specifications.
- Attend staff meetings, training sessions and various events that the shop participates in.
- Key-holders will be responsible for opening and closing the shop.
To apply, please email the following to the address below:
- A work history resume. I know that it might not include work in the fly fishing industry or even retail/customer service but I want to see your employment history.
- A cover letter. The cover letter is where you tell me about yourself and why you want to work in the fly shop. The cover letter should include:
o Your fly fishing background – a summary of your involvement in the sport, like where you have fished, the species you have targeted, and what products you like to use.
o Your involvement in the fly fishing community
o Your fly tying and boating experience
o Your interaction with social media platforms
o Your customer service and/or volunteer experience
o Any other experience you have that you feel would be important to your success in the job and the success of the shop.
o Extra consideration is given if you have management, social media, photography, data entry, e-comm, fly tying, and/or teaching experience.
Email the above to [email protected]
I have been working in the fly fishing industry for almost 30 years, primarily running fly shops. Galveston Fishing Company is the second shop I have opened from scratch. I share this so that you know that I will use my knowledge and experience to help you be successful as a staff member and fly fisher.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.
