Then and now on the bays and coastlines of South Texas. Photo from Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. The great Karankawa tribe of Texas and Karankawa Nation still call these coastal waters home. Although the technologies and hull designs etc have changed the land and sea have not. It still provides the bounty, grasses, etc that sustains the local populations and the spirit of adventure we all share! Texas Master Naturalist Program Crescent Kayaks ACA Texas ACA Paddlesports

You never know who may show up with our Goose Island State Park kayaking trips! Throwback when the little blacktip said hi! See their website for upcoming bay tour dates! Common questions we get about blacktips is are they a danger to humans? Yes-they are a shark. Risk / danger factor however is low although bites have occurred they are naturally timid unless competing for food. They typically hunt near the surface and commonly found in shallow bays just like ours around Rockport. They commonly get to 5 foot or so and not uncommon for them to breach the surface during feeding. Texas Master Naturalist ProgramCrescent Kayaks

As a naturalist before I go to a new region of the state to paddle I read books about the history of the land and study about the culture of the locals both current and the ancients that inhabited it. I also have a thing for cryptozoology, paranormal, etc. Since the Devils has literally exploded in popularity the last few years I thought I’d share a bit of the folklore you may not know about but may find interesting. In the remote canyon country of Val Verde County along the Devil's River, a legend has persisted since the 1840s about a girl who was raised by wolves after her parents died in a Comanche attack and who was spotted multiple times over the following decade living in the brush country canyons with a wolf pack. 🐺👁️
The Lobo Girl of Devil's River legend originates with specific documented accounts rather than vague folklore. In 1835, a settler named John Dent and his pregnant wife were reportedly killed in a lightning strike during a severe storm near the Devil's River. Their infant daughter, if she survived, would have been left alone in a remote canyon in one of the most hostile landscapes in Texas. A decade later, in the mid-1840s, settlers in the area began reporting sightings of a feral figure, described consistently as a young woman moving with inhuman speed and agility through the canyon country, accompanied by wolves, who fled when approached and was never successfully captured.

The most detailed account comes from 1852, when a rancher named Garnett reportedly managed to briefly capture the figure and described her as a young woman of perhaps 17 or 18 years, sun-darkened, with callused hands and feet, who bit and scratched with an animal ferocity and who howled in a way that immediately brought wolves converging from the surrounding brush. She escaped before she could be secured, and was reportedly sighted one more time, in 1853, with what appeared to be two wolf cubs, before all accounts of her ceased. Whether the Lobo Girl was real, a misidentified wild animal, or a story that grew from a tragic family history into something larger is a question the Devil's River canyon has never answered.

No kayak is perfect for everything. Manufactures are always having to deal with the physics of speed vs stability vs turning ability, etc. I currently have 38 kayaks in my fleet all major brand names. For me, one of the most underrated affordable kayaks out there is the Jackson Bite angler. Here it is on the Devils and San Marcos River as well as on a lone oyster island in the bay near the intercostal. Although not pictured I’d also have to throw the Crescent CK1 in that conversation. What kayaks do you feel are underrated and a lot of bang for the buck? ACA PaddlesportsJackson KayakCrescent Kayaks
