False Positives?

Over the last year I’ve been hearing the term “false positive” used more and more in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaching world escpecially with regard to submissions. As an example the instructor will say, “you should not tap to this foot lock because there is a stupid-easy escape called such-and-such that you can do to get out.” While I agree that there is an escape that may be called such-and-such or this-and-that for nearly every position and submission in the market the beginner should never be put in a position where they feel they will be judged for tapping to a submission. No matter what level a practioner is if their escape route is inferior to their opponent’s submission path that submission should be classified as a “true positive.”

The bottom line: tap when you feel you are caught.

Lesson after the lesson: If you tell a group of kids to attack you all-at-once they will do so with great enthusiasm.
