September 1, 1981

Guilford's Brian Petrina appears in the NIC-10 History Book one time, for winning the 98-pound conference wrestling title in 1981. That was a pretty stacked list of champions. It includes three Jefferson wrestling greats in Steve Badura, Beattie Ferguson and future NFL football player Leonard Bell along with one of Boylan's all-time best wrestlers in Guy Locksmith.

Petrina never won another title .... because he didn't get a chance. A couple of weeks before his junior year, he suffered severe head injuries in a trail bike accident and died 12 days later. All these years later, he's likely only remembered by family. On Sept. 1, 1981, Register Star sportswriter Dave Albee highlighted what probably been a pretty successful future Guilford grad. Here's a chance to remember Brian's story.
