Meet Keegan “Faísca” Richards, after school program instructor at Grand Rapids Capoeira.

Faísca started his capoeira journey in 2015 at Grand Valley State University Capoeira Club and studied at many workshops. The beauty of the art and culture is what attracted him to Capoeira, and the strategy and philosophy is why he stayed. He was inspired by that experience to bring that community and knowledge to Innovation Central and the scholars that come there to learn, as a part of Grand Rapids Capoeira.

Meet Juston “Instrutor Talento” Espinoza, lead instructor and founder of Grand Rapids Capoeira.

Talento began training Capoeira in 2005 at Grand Valley State University and has trained throughout the United States, visiting a variety of other groups. He has taught workshops and performed throughout Michigan for schools, non-profits, festivals, and businesses.

Talento can usually be found teaching classes with a grin and more than a few jokes (they’re not always funny, but occasionally they get a chuckle). He aims to create a space where training is fun, even after doing 500 kicks, and any question is welcome.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to our event this past Saturday! We celebrated Instrutor Talento's 20 years in Capoeira with workshops from Prof. Show Grande and Mestre Baz and a roda. We're grateful for our Michigan (and Minnesota) Capoeira community coming together for a day of training, smiles, and axé. Here's to the next 20 years!

Hey Capoeiristas! I’m excited to share a project I’ve been working on for the past two years: a new line of abadás.

For the longest time I thought that my struggles getting abadás for my group, explaining to new students why they’re tight in all the wrong places, and letting students know that they should really go a size bigger than what they’re used to was only a problem for me and a few of my friends. In the past couple of years, I’ve seen Facebook posts where dozens of other Capoeiristas were sharing these exact frustrations so I thought, “I could probably fix that…”. Two years later and I’m getting closer to a fully developed product. In fact, the picture on this post is of me wearing a pair of our first test run with an adjusted fit and durable fabric.

I still have some details to hammer out, but I wanted to share this with the greater Capoeira community. If these abadás are something you’d be interested in for you or your group, please join the waitlist on www.flowmotionapparel.com . You’re not ordering anything, your just giving me an idea of whether to leave these pants to small runs for my group or to go big!

Happy Pride Month! Earning a rank with a title is an amazingly special moment for a capoeirista. We wanted to make sure as many people as possible could experience that accomplishment while staying true to their gender identity. After some research, we're proud to share the gender neutral Capoeira titles in our school!
