The Dojo vs The Gym
My opinon My experience
Dojos are a place of deeper learning beyond the technique.
Gyms have been the place to preform technique and master the physical.
In many modern mentor-student relationships, loyalty and respect are being replaced by ego, impatience, and the constant search for βbetter options.β Small disagreements that once would have been handled with communication and humility now often become major conflicts because pride takes over. Instead of seeing correction as guidance from someone more experienced, some people view it as a personal attack on their status or identity. Social media, instant gratification, and a culture that encourages people to move on the moment things become uncomfortable have made commitment and accountability weaker than they once were.
A true mentor is not there only to praise you β they are there to challenge you, correct mistakes, and help build discipline, character, and growth. When someone becomes combative toward a mentor over minor conflict, it often shows emotional immaturity, insecurity, or an inflated ego rather than strength. Real growth usually comes from working through difficulties with respect and understanding, not abandoning loyalty the moment emotions flare up.
Strong students understand that disagreements, hard lessons, and ego checks are part of the journey. Loyalty does not mean blind obedience, but it does mean showing respect for the person who invested time, knowledge, and effort into helping you grow.
