Rock River Archery Club members, Eric and Gable Hartter, put their tags on a couple turkeys this past week. Here is how they got it done.
“I got setup Friday morning. Heard some distant gobbling early then got kinda quiet. Then around 6:30 or so I heard a tom gobble to the north. I looked that way and saw 3 hens making their way my way. They ended up out in front of me about 100 yards. Not long after the tom came to check them out. When he got out by them I gave a few soft clucks and he looked my way. I gave the 3/4 strut jake decoy a little turn and thats all it took. He came in on a string to about 15 yards where I dumped him over.”
“Gable and Finn and myself decided to get out last night, as I started getting some turkey pictures. As we where walking in we saw a tom heading away from us about 1/4 mile away. We debated about going back around and coming in from the other direction to try to cut him off but decided to just head to the blind. We were sitting playing some cards when I looked up and about 350 yards away I spotted a tom struttin on the opposite side of the creek. We continued playing the game while keeping an eye on him. Then as the game got over he was still there it was about 6:45. Gable wanted to make a move on him so all 3 of us piled out of the blind and began the stalk. We got to within about 100 yard before we popped out of the willows along the creek. By that time he was about 75 yards away on the top of the creek bank. There were 3 hens down on the sand bar. Gable and myself proceeded to belly crawl out into the open with our strutter decoy out in front of us. Afrer he saw the decoy, it was all over. He came struttin into about 25 yards where Gable put the smack down on him! Awesome hunt.”
