We all played them when we were younger. You dip your head under the water while your friend counts the seconds above you. Then you come up, once you start seeing stars or your lungs burn like a raging fire, hoping against hope you got at least a second or two more than your friend did and can be declared the winner. As you recover, you pant and count as your friend goes down for their turn.

We didn’t know that those stars, that burning was our bodies saying they were about to pass out. We didn’t know we were literally seconds from what is now known as Shallow Water Blackout or Breath-Hold Blackout, a serious condition that can cause involuntary drowning and death.

Don’t expect other children or even adults to realize that the child is in trouble either. They could just look like they are trying to hold their breath and play the game, when they are really in trouble.

So, ban those breath holding games for good and make sure our kids have safe alternatives to choose from instead.

The short answer to this- probably! Their instructor is new, the pool facility is new, and they are learning to do something new...put those elements together and you have a recipe for possible 😢😭

Children like routine & familiarity, so we are not surprised when they fuss in the initial days or weeks of lessons. Thankfully, we find that this behavior typically tapers off as they begin to build trust & a rapport with their instructor and as they feel more confident in their skills💪🏽

While it's tempting to hold out for a magical "no cry" method to swimming or to wait until your child is older with the hope that they will cry less, keep in mind that they are the most vulnerable to drowning between the ages of 1-4. Our swim parents will tell you that any tears are a worthy trade-off for the priceless self-rescue skills they will learn!

Are lessons REALLY just 10 minutes?! 😱

We know, we know....it sounds a little crazy but this is very much by design. Here's a bit of info as to why we do short, frequent lessons in ISR...

💦 It's the way young children learn 💦

As babies, we don't practice walking once a week. Standing, balancing, cruising are done in tiny increments each day as part of our experience of learning to walk. And similar to walking, swimming is a sensorimotor skill best learned by experience over time.

💦Kids thrive on routine💦

The consistency of the daily lesson schedule creates an optimal learning environment. When kids know where they are going, who they will be with, and what is expected of them they begin to feel confident and secure, building trust with their instructor as they are taught these priceless skills.

💦It’s WORK!💦

People often think of swimming as a "for fun" activity, but they forget...it's a workout! Little bodies get tired quickly, and fatigued muscles + water (the most unforgiving environment on the planet) = dangerous. Safety is our top priority, so instructors closely monitor your child's fatigue to ensure they are practicing efficiently for an optimal learning experience.

As ISR Instructors, it is our job to educate our families on fun and safe water play time at home that will not interfere with their child’s self-rescue skills. We advise our swim parents to never use any flotation devices that will float their child vertically as this changes their sensorimotor instincts to be vertical in the water, which puts their horizontal swim and float at serious risk. This vertical posture could also find them in the drowning posture should they have an accidental fall into the water.

Instead of puddlejumpers, life jackets, ring/tube floats, noodles etc., we advise parents to use a device such as the one in this pic. A float that the child can ride on or sit on that has a solid bottom is the best flotation device for an ISR student. This momma got it right!!! She also gets bonus points for putting a brightly colored swim suit on her little guy! 👏 👏
