Why I ask y'all sto sometimes shift your hips before a reclined twist!

Have you ever been told to “scoot your hips to one side” in a reclined twist? Or to “keep your opposite shoulder down”? 🤔

These cues pop up a lot in yoga classes, but their purposes aren’t always clear.

Here’s what’s actually going on biomechanically:

🔹Scooting the hips – for example, shifting hips left before lowering legs right – helps create a more isolated spinal rotation instead of combining it with some spinal lateral flexion.

🔹Letting the opposite shoulder lift is totally fine. If you prefer it grounded, simply prop under your legs so the shoulder can rest more easily.

🔹Different leg setups (both knees bent, one straight, both straight) each change the feel and muscular emphasis of the pose.

I unpack all of this – and more – in a short tutorial that clarifies the “why” behind these common cues.

Warrior one to warrior 2 may feel weird af, but it's not going to kill your hip joint 😉

Warrior one to warrior 2 may feel weird af, but it's not going to kill your hip joint 😉

There’s nothing to fear about “closed-to-open” hip transitions in yoga. But if you listen to old school yoga rules that refuse to die, you might believe otherwise! 😛

It’s true: warrior 3 —> half moon is a perfectly safe, A-OK transition! ✅

Rotating one’s pelvis relative to one’s femur is a normal human movement. Did you know??

Rather than banning one specific hip movement ❌, we should instead move our hips in all the ways they can move on a regular basis to keep them happy and mobile.

My blog post features a complete explanation of why this yoga rule is biomechanical b.s. 👎

This article includes new insights on the topic that definitively close the case on this old school yoga alignment rule… forever! Muahahaha 😈

I love seeing the surprise on new folks' faces when I tell them we hold poses for 10 minutes in restorative yoga 😯

Yes, it seems like you're not really doing anything.

Yes, your mind is going to try to convince you that there's something better you could be doing with your time.

Yes, you're gonna want to fidget and wiggle and adjust a million times.

But also... no, there's no where else you need to be, and no, there's nothing more important to be doing.

In a world where we are constantly bombarded with beeps and buzzes and to-dos and URGENT, restorative yoga is the antidote.

I give you a safe space to just exist as a person. For however long practice lasts, there are no to-do lists. There are no deadlines. There are no email or messages to reply to.

If your nervous system needs a reset, or you just need scheduled quiet time you can't get anywhere else, come practice yoga with me. Let's work on relaxing your whole being one breath at a time. 🫶
