Match Recap: Rogues vs. Metro D3
Your “Mid-City Mad Men” Rogues D3 Rugby Club stood tall on home turf Saturday, defending the pitch against the feared newcomers from Metropolis D3.
Metro struck first about 15 minutes in, dotting down after a scrappy opening stanza. That early lapse was just the kick in the backside the Rogues needed. From there, it was Rochester Rugby at its finest: hard carries with extra meters gained, suffocating flat-line defense, and bone-crunching tackles.
The momentum shifted around the 27th minute when a slick multi-pass backline move went 40+ meters and was finished off by none other than Marius “the Polar Bear Rustler”, fresh off his two-year hiatus saving baby penguins from great white sharks in Antarctica. Danny “Dirty Potato” a.k.a. “Golden Toe” coolly slotted the extras (who says gingers can’t kick?).
Ten minutes later, the Rogues were camped deep in Metro territory, smashing, rucking, and rolling until Pedro “The Punisher” bulldozed across the line for the second try. Danny’s boot was good again, making it 14–7 heading into the half.
Fueled by gummy bears and pure s*x appeal at the break, the lads smelled blood. Early in the second half, Danny himself turned into the “Red Rocket,” streaking across the line to the delight of 92% of his hometown gathered on the sidelines. Naturally, he converted his own try.
About 15 minutes later, it was Pollo’s time to shine. With his trademark smash-and-grab rugby, he punished defenders twice in the span of 10 minutes, securing a brace of tries. Danny kept the scoreboard moving with two more perfect conversions.
The final dagger came from young Diego “The Future Legend.” After busting line breaks all game and earning his second of the year Man of the Match award, he capped it all with a 55-meter scamper to the try zone. Our in-house legal counsel, Michael “The Pickpocket Constable,” finished the scoring day with a flawless 1-for-1 conversion.
Final: Rochester Rogues 42 – Metro 7.
It was gritty, smash-mouth, old-school rugby — and a full team effort. Next up: a road trip to St. Paul to battle our compadres, the Pigs, as the Rogues stay in the hunt for a top-2 MN seed
